🎉 Named Scotland Heating Installer of the Year 2026

Add a Battery to Your Existing Solar Panels in Scotland: No New Inverter, No Rewire

Store the daytime solar you currently export at 4–12p/kWh instead of buying it back at 24–30p+ after dark. Compatibility checked against EcoFlow’s list before you’re quoted, MCS-certified install.

Most recent win:

From around £600 a month to £24.79 A Gartcosh family cut their electricity bill by around £6,900 a year after we installed solar and battery storage and corrected their existing heat pump. Most months, their own roof and battery now cover the lot.

“There was no hard sell, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do. They took the time to get the design right for my home, properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage, and it’s working flawlessly.”

Your Solar Panels Are Already Working. Your Inverter Is Selling the Result Too Cheap

A lot of Scottish solar arrays went up during the Feed-in Tariff years, 2010 to 2019, on stone cottages, harled semis and rural properties running oil or LPG because there’s no mains gas nearby. Those panels still generate; they just have nowhere to put power that isn’t used the moment it’s made. Every unused kilowatt-hour gets exported under the Smart Export Guarantee at 4–12p/kWh, then bought back after dark at 24–30p+/kWh, and that gap is where the money leaks.

A solar battery retrofit closes that gap without touching the array already on your roof, storing daytime generation for the early-morning and evening draw most Scottish homes have. If you don’t have solar yet, see our guide to solar panel installation across Scotland.

Find Out If Your Inverter Already Qualifies

This page covers whether a DC Fit battery retrofit will work with the inverter you already have; for other EcoFlow PowerOcean options, see our full battery storage service.

Most retrofits need a new inverter because they connect on the AC side, but DC Fit sits on the DC side between your panels and your existing inverter and builds its own PV output: your existing inverter never has to know a battery was added. EcoFlow publishes only a short incompatibility list, not a compatibility one, and we check your inverter against it before you’re quoted.

Which Inverters Does DC Fit Work With?

EcoFlow publishes no compatibility list for DC Fit, only a short list of what it doesn’t work with: if your inverter isn’t on it, it qualifies.

Excluded brand-wide, no exceptions:

  • All microinverters
  • SolarEdge

Excluded by specific series only (other models from these brands are not affected):

  • Kaco BLUEPLANET TL1/TL3/NX1/NX3 series
  • Bosch BPT-S series
  • SolaX X3 series
  • AISWEI/Solplanet ASW LT-G2 series
  • SMA TL10 series
  • Sungrow SH series

EcoFlow updates this list periodically, so we always confirm your exact inverter against their current version before quoting.

How a DC-Coupled Solar Battery Retrofit Actually Works

Most retrofit batteries in Scotland are AC-coupled, connecting at the consumer unit and needing new AC wiring. DC Fit is DC-coupled instead, wired inline between your panels and your inverter’s DC input: adding battery storage to an existing solar system without the AC rewiring most standard retrofits need.

That removes three jobs from the install:

  • No additional storage inverter
  • No inverter replacement
  • No AC rewiring

Notifying your network operator under G98/G99 is still required: paperwork we handle.

The battery itself is modular: stack 5.1kWh, 10.2kWh or 15.3kWh of capacity from EF BD-5.1-S1 packs, with output up to 5kW.

  • LFP cell chemistry with an integrated fire prevention module
  • IP65-rated, runs from -20°C to 50°C: a Scottish winter sits well inside its range
  • Floor-standing or wall-mounted, whichever your garage or utility space suits

What a Battery Retrofit Costs in Scotland

Home Energy Scotland funds heat pumps, not solar batteries: two things genuinely apply here instead.

  • No Home Energy Scotland grant or loan for battery storage.
  • 0% VAT on battery installations, including retrofits, until 31 March 2027.
  • Reclaim your Smart Export Guarantee spread: stop selling power at 4–12p/kWh and buying it back at 24–30p+/kWh.

Exact cost depends on your storage needs and existing roof setup: your survey gives a written quote, and our breakdown of is battery storage worth it in Scotland covers the full payback math.

From £600 a Month to £24.79: Christine's Solar and Battery Transformation in Gartcosh

Christine’s family home in Gartcosh, Glasgow was running up electricity bills averaging around £600 in some months, even though the property already had an air source heat pump. The heat pump had never been set up correctly and was consuming far more electricity than it needed to. After a detailed survey and analysis of the family’s energy use, we installed a 10.5 kWp black bifacial solar PV array with 20.8 kWh of battery storage, and fully optimised the existing heat pump with corrected flow temperatures, system balancing, and control adjustments.

The monthly electricity bill dropped to £24.79, an annual saving of around £6,900. Most months, 100% of the family’s daily electricity now comes from solar generation and stored battery power.

“Excellent service before and after installation. We’ve had very attentive customer service from Sean, and are very happy with the outcome of the installation of solar panels and batteries. We are also grateful for his knowledge and input into adjusting our heat pump and currently our bills are massively reduced. Being able to text Sean at any time to ask a question and get a helpful reply within a reasonable amount of time has been a very important aspect to me of the service before and after installation.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels in Scotland?

Yes, in most cases: the EcoFlow PowerOcean DC Fit adds a battery to your existing solar system without a new inverter. We check your inverter against the short incompatibility list before quoting.

Usually not with DC Fit: being DC-coupled, it sits inline between your panels and your existing inverter instead of connecting at the consumer unit. Most standard retrofits do need an inverter swap; this is the exception.

For an existing array, DC-coupled beats AC-coupled on disruption: no new inverter, no AC rewiring, faster on site. AC-coupled suits homes without solar; for a Scottish retrofit, DC-coupled is less invasive.

How much it costs to add a battery to your solar system depends on the capacity you need and your existing inverter and array. Retrofits qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027; your survey gives an exact quote.

No: Home Energy Scotland funds heat pumps, not solar PV or battery storage. 0% VAT and Smart Export Guarantee income are the real savings levers for a battery retrofit.

For most FIT-era Scottish installs, your Feed-in Tariff payments are based on what your panels produce, not on what you do with that power, so adding a battery doesn’t typically affect your FIT income.

Yes, that’s common on rural Scottish properties that went solar between 2010 and 2019. Panel age isn’t the limiting factor: inverter compatibility is.

A DC Fit retrofit is typically faster than a standard battery installation, since there’s no inverter swap and no AC rewiring involved.
