What size air source heat pump do you need for a Scottish home? That’s the question every homeowner ends up asking, and it matters more than most people realise. Scottish homes aren’t standardised. You’ve got stone terraces, 80s timber frames, new builds with UFH, draughty cottages, and everything in between. Each one loses heat differently, so the heat pump must be sized to match the property’s real heat loss, not a guess, not a rule of thumb, and definitely not boiler-style “bigger is better”.
In this guide
Get in touch with Aventus Eco and find out more about using an air source heat pump in your Scottish property.
“Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why.”
Alison Hyde, ★★★★★ Google Review
Sizing heat pumps is about ensuring your system delivers the right amount of heat to your home. The power of a heat pump is rated in kilowatts (kW). This tells you how much heat the unit can produce at one time. Unlike conventional boilers, which produce heat by burning gas, an air-source heat pump (ASHP) extracts heat from the outside air and distributes it throughout your home. This is part of why they’re so efficient, even during colder months, but it also means sizing has to be matched to your home’s specific heat demand.
One of the most frequent errors is to apply the same physics to heat pump sizing as to boiler sizing. Boilers can be oversized without significant problems, but heat pumps are most effective when correctly sized for the property. If your system is oversized, it can short-cycle, compromising efficiency and lifespan; if your heat pump is too small, it may struggle on frigid days and be unable to keep rooms comfortable.
To help you choose the right capacity of air source heat pump for your type of house, its insulation levels, and radiator setup, check out our air source heat pump sizing guide. When sized correctly, your heat pump keeps you comfortable, runs efficiently, and allows you to realise the full potential of renewable heating.
Most homes keep more radiators than they expect. The £0 survey checks every room, not a rule of thumb.
“Sean promptly visited my home, conducted a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors, and successfully identified the root cause of the issue.”

Knowledge of heat loss is essential for accurately sizing a heat pump system. At its most basic, heat loss is a measure of how much warmth your home lets out through the walls, windows, floors and roof as well as through ventilation. This is something professional installers do, and the maths isn’t too hard: fabric losses (through the building’s structure) and ventilation losses (by air movement). This gives you an overall heat demand in kilowatts (kW) that you can use to determine the size of a heat pump for your home.
It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. Each room is evaluated separately, as a spacious living room with large windows will lose more heat than a small, well-insulated bedroom. Room-by-room calculation means your system will deliver the correct amount of heat to exactly where it’s needed, ensuring every part of your home feels warm and cosy.
Getting this right matters. An oversized heat pump can cause short-cycling, turning on and off too often and running unnecessarily, wasting energy. Undersizing, meanwhile, runs the risk of freezing ‘cold’ rooms and a system that labours during Scotland’s coldest days.
These calculations are regulated by strict guidelines set by MCS-accredited installers in Scotland. This ensures your heat pump is sized correctly, meets regulations and operates efficiently. A heat pump sizing calculator from a Scottish utility is usually not the best source of information, but another set of eyes can ensure nothing is overlooked, from pipework to radiator outputs.
Get in touch with Aventus Eco and find out how our experts calculate the perfect heat pump size for your Scottish property.
“They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly.”
Duncan Livingstone, ★★★★★ Google Review
Online air-source heat pump sizing calculators can be pretty appealing; they’re fast, easy, and free. But in Scotland, they frequently provide a misleading picture. Each home here is unique: solid stone walls, old terrace housing, and levels of insulation all affect heat demand. Most calculators make these assumptions using broad strokes that don’t account for local differences.
We often forget things like window type, floor insulation, draughts, and differences in ventilation. They could also ignore room-by-room heat demands, which are essential for a well-balanced system. As useful as a heat pump sizing calculator in Scotland may sound, it can’t replace that professional heat loss survey. Certified installers take extreme care to measure your property, check the radiators and pipework, and make allowances for the quirks of Scottish homes.
Depending entirely on internet calculators can lead you to a system that’s too small for your needs, leaving you shivering on the coldest days of winter, or one that’s too large, squandering energy and short-cycling. Getting it wrong could mean uncomfortable air, high bills, and an early death for your heat pump.
Get in touch with Aventus Eco and see why our professional survey beats online calculators every time.
“Very efficient from start to finish from Sean & co, took 4 days and we’re really happy with how it’s working. Sean also took time to talk us through how it all works and has been on hand to answer any question post-installation.”

To give you a starting point, here’s a quick heat pump sizing chart for common Scottish homes. Most Scottish homes typically need a heat pump between 5 and 8 kW, depending on insulation and layout. A proper survey is essential for accuracy.
Remember: All of this is just a guide. Each house is unique, and the ideal size can vary depending on specifics such as insulation, draughts, room layout and window types. Which is why sizing a heat pump for your house isn’t as simple as choosing a number; it’s about selecting the system that aligns with your home’s specific heat loss and radiator placement.
With this chart, you can get a rough idea of the capacity your home might need. But I suspect that, for a close recommendation, a professional evaluation will always be best. This will help your heat pump work efficiently, warm your home, and save you unnecessary costs.
Once you know your size band, our air source heat pump cost guide shows what each system costs installed, and the Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant guide covers the £7,500 you can take off that figure.

Radiator surface area decides whether a heat pump can run at efficient low flow temperatures: many older Scottish radiators were sized for hot boiler water and need upsizing when the system is designed properly. For the full picture, including how much bigger radiators need to be and when oversizing pays back, see our heat pump radiator sizing guide.

“Outstanding service, difficult decision to make to change to air source heat pump especially give the level of misinformation. Sean/Aventus Eco were outstanding in helping me explore and decide that this was right solution.…

Flow temperature: The temperature of the water leaving your heat pump to warm your radiators. It also affects the sizing of air-source heat pumps, since lower flow temperatures mean larger radiators or a slightly larger system capacity are needed to deliver the same comfort.
For example, 35°C is a good flow temperature for modern, well-insulated homes with oversized radiators. This way, you ensure your heat pump system runs efficiently, saving on energy and wear.
We can also easily couple a good radiator design with flow temperature in one sweep. More panels, more radiators, or a high-output model will allow you to work at much lower temperatures while maintaining the same level of comfort. Using an appropriately sized radiator matched to the right flow temperature, your heat pump will operate at maximum efficiency and keep you feeling warm and snug inside, regardless of how cold it is outside in Scotland.
Get in touch with Aventus Eco and let us help you design a system that’s perfectly matched to your home.
“The heat pump he installed is a massive upgrade from my old gas boiler: my flat is now warm, comfortable, and affordable to heat, with a COP of 4.26 in November. The outdoor unit is silent and even looks good.”

At Aventus Eco, we don’t install buffer tanks because a well-designed heat pump system doesn’t need one.
Many installers use buffer tanks to compensate for poorly balanced systems or to hide design flaws like oversized emitters or mismatched flow rates. But they add cost, take up space, and introduce unnecessary complexity.
Our systems are built around open-loop circulation and a single pump, carefully matched to the flow and heat demand of your home. With weather compensation, correctly sized emitters, and expert commissioning, the system operates smoothly without short-cycling or temperature swings; no buffers are needed.
You need room in two places: a patch of outside wall or ground for the outdoor unit, and a spot indoors for the hot water cylinder. The Vaillant aroTHERM plus and the Panasonic Aquarea monobloc, the two makes we advise most often, measure up like this on the manufacturers’ own specification sheets:
| Outdoor unit | Size (H × W × D) | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Vaillant aroTHERM plus 3.5 kW and 5 kW | 765 × 1,100 × 450 mm | 114 kg |
| Vaillant aroTHERM plus 7 kW | 965 × 1,100 × 450 mm | 128 kg |
| Vaillant aroTHERM plus 10 kW and 12 kW | 1,565 × 1,100 × 450 mm | 194 to 210 kg |
| Panasonic Aquarea J monobloc 5 kW and 9 kW | 865 × 1,283 × 320 mm | 99 to 104 kg |
The unit also needs clear air around it. For a 3.5 to 7 kW aroTHERM plus standing on the ground, Vaillant’s installation manual asks for 600 mm in front, 200 mm behind, 100 mm at the left-hand end and 500 mm at the right-hand end (viewed from the front), with 1,000 mm above. Vaillant also wants the air outlet at least 3 m from paths, rendered walls and downpipes, because the air leaving the fan is colder than the air outside and can ice them over on a frosty morning. Other makes publish their own figures, and we check them against the actual spot on your wall at the survey.
Inside, the cylinder is the bigger change for a home coming off a combi boiler with no tank. Vaillant’s uniSTOR heat pump cylinders stand on a round footprint:
| uniSTOR cylinder (insulated) | Diameter | Height |
|---|---|---|
| 150 litre slimline | 435 mm | 1,667 mm |
| 200 litre | 595 mm | 1,265 mm |
| 250 litre | 595 mm | 1,535 mm |
| 300 litre | 595 mm | 1,745 mm |
On the Mount Florida sandstone end-terrace we converted, the 250 litre cylinder went into the basement. Planning rules set the last limit on the outdoor unit: permitted development in Scotland allows one air source heat pump per building, no part of it can stick out more than 1 metre from the wall or roof, and in the garden it cannot sit forward of a wall that faces a road, and it has to meet the MCS noise standard at the nearest neighbour. In a conservation area it also has to sit at the rear, at ground level.
When it comes to heat pump sizing, there are a few common mistakes that can cost you comfort and efficiency. You’re taking a risk with “rule of thumb” sizing; each Scottish home has its own insulation, room sizes and window style. Another red flag: skipping a professional heat-loss survey because assumptions may result in a system that’s too small or too big.
Too much dependence on online calculators can be a huge issue as well. They don’t take into account any draughts, how much heat the radiators produce, or what type of floor you have, essential information needed to size accurately. And with a boiler mindset that still breeds “bigger is better”, there are plenty of oversized systems causing short-cycling and inefficiency.
Failing to factor in radiator performance is another common mistake. Small, outdated radiators and a low-flow heat pump combined might make rooms feel cold and make your system work harder. Sizing and output lot right on the radiator are also just as important as selecting the correct heat pump capacity.
Avoid these errors, and your new heating system will provide you with comfort, efficiency, and a decade of reliable operation.

“After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits.”
Stuart Campbell, ★★★★★ Google Review
We know what a difference it can make to size a heat pump for your home. For a stone house from the 1920s in Mount Florida, accurate calculations of heat loss and radiator output made the difference between a struggling system and one that was cosy and efficient. New builds with underfloor heating can be served by low-flow temperatures and small pumps, whereas older terraces have larger radiators and require slightly larger units to keep you comfortable. These instances illustrate that proper sizing isn’t just hypothetical; it affects both how poorly or how well you’re heating and cooling your dwelling and the amount of energy you’re paying for, as well as what it feels like inside your house, no matter the season.

Determining the correct heat pump size begins with a proper heat loss calculation. Each home is different, from stone terraces to modern builds, and not in all cases does the house type equate to the right system for its insulation, radiator configuration, or hot water usage. Although an air-source heat pump sizing calculator in Scotland can provide an approximation, it’s nothing compared to a professional evaluation. In matched systems, your heat pump, air handler, and evaporator coil are engineered to work together to maximise efficiency and reliability.

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.+0Posted on Google![]()

We wanted to retrofit our home to improve energy efficiency, change to an air source heat pump (ASHP) and add solar panels and a battery. Aventus Eco was recommended by a Retrofit Consultancy. Sean clearly explained and planned out the processes for our ASHP. We really felt that he was interested to make it work well for us. Installation was smooth. The team was well coordinated and communicated well during the process. They completed the work to a very high standard and minimised any disruption to our home. We were so impressed with the ASHP fitting that we quickly followed this up with Aventus Eco planning and installing our solar panels and battery. We would highly recommend Sean and the Aventus Eco team.Posted on Google![]()

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.Posted on Google![]()

Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.+2Posted on Google![]()

Overall, I’m really pleased with the service from Aventus Eco and would definitely recommend them to others. Thanks again to Sean and the whole team!Posted on Google![]()
