Key takeaways

Many Scots live in older dwellings. A significant proportion of housing comprises Victorian terraces, stone-built houses, and traditional homes. The common question we hear is simply: Will an air-source heat pump work in my old house?

The succinct answer is yes, provided the system is well-designed and thoroughly evaluated.

An air-source heat pump for any age of house does not have an ‘age limit’. An air-source heat pump can be installed in a house of any age. Its performance is determined by heat loss, radiator size, and system design, not the age of the building. When those are done right, heat pumps can perform beautifully in retrofit applications and often do even better than boilers on the comfort front.

Can You Install an Air-Source Heat Pump in an Old House?

Outdoor Vaillant heat pump system in a residential garden in Scotland.

Old house and air-source heat pump? The building’s age doesn’t preclude it. The important thing is how much heat the home loses and how the heating system is engineered to replace it.

Lower heating temperatures already suit many older homes in Scotland. Thick stone walls, large rooms, and radiators decades or even a century old can maintain consistent heat if the system is adequately sized. In such cases, problems can occur when installers treat a heat pump as a boiler replacement and fail to perform the appropriate checks.

To function, a heat pump for existing homes requires three things:

  • A precise heat loss calculation
  • Emitters capable of providing higher output at lower flow temperatures
  • Correct setup and commissioning

If those steps are followed correctly, an air-source heat pump in an old house can indeed heat the house effectively and reliably.

What matters less than people think:

  • The year the house was built
  • The walls are solid stone
  • Whether every room has new insulation

Old houses are different, but different is not the same as unsuitable.

Could a heat pump work in your own property?

A proper heat loss and system survey gives clear answers without guesswork.

“Brilliant service would use again.”

Why Old & Traditional Scottish Homes Are Different

Close-up of a Vaillant heat pump outside a residential property in Scotland.

Many older houses have:

  • Solid stone or brick walls
  • Higher ceilings
  • More air movement through the structure
  • Larger room volumes

These features lead to greater heat loss but more evenly distribute the heat. A heat pump in an old stone house is best when it operates slowly and continuously, rather than on short cycles.

That’s where problems begin when modern boiler logic is quashed in older homes. Boilers operate at very high temperatures and undergo rapid cycling. Heat pumps depend, of course, on steady output as well as surface area.

A conventional house won’t require much work to be compatible with a heat pump. It just needs the system to follow how the building actually holds and dissipates heat.

That’s why you succeed or fail with heat pumps in the design of old houses, not in their installation.

If your home is stone-built or traditionally constructed, the next step is clarity.

A survey shows how your house behaves and what changes are actually needed.

Heat Pumps in Victorian Homes: What Actually Matters

Image of a Vaillant heat pump outside a residential property in Scotland, on a concrete base with surrounding fencing.

Victorian homes account for a large proportion of Scotland’s existing homes, and they are one type of home people are told is “not suitable” for heat pumps. In practice, a heat pump in a Victorian house can be very successful, but not when it’s shoe-horned into boiler logic at the expense of the building.

Victorian homes typically have:

  • Solid brick or stone walls
  • High ceilings
  • Large room volumes
  • Original or oversized radiators

The presence of these features raises heat demand but also encourages even (steady) heating. Heat pumps work best when they can operate more gently over longer stretches of time, and this actually plays quite nicely into Victorian layouts.

Where installations break down isn’t in the house but in how we approach it.

The common theme in many of the failed Victorian house air-source heat pump installations is:

  • No proper heat loss calculation
  • Radiators sized for boilers, not low flow temperatures
  • Systems pushed to run too hot to compensate

All efficiency goes out the window, and comfort drops when flow temperatures are forced higher. That’s not a Victorian house issue; it’s a design issue.

Sized adequately for a Victorian building of that age, the heat pump runs continuously. When it does, the house remains at a comfortable temperature, so you don’t feel the big swings of heat and coolness we associate with boilers.

If you live in a Victorian property, design accuracy matters more than anything else.

A room-by-room heat loss survey is the difference between success and disappointment.

Will a Heat Pump Work With Old Radiators?

Photo of a Vaillant heat pump outside a building in Scotland, showing energy-efficient heating solutions.

This is one of the biggest questions homeowners ask, and one of our most misunderstood yet persuasive responses.

Yes, an air-source heat pump can be used with existing radiators. The problem isn’t so much that radiators are “old”; it’s that, if they’re not large enough to have a lot of surface area to deliver heat, as warm-water and steam systems require.

Boilers are usually designed to produce flow temperatures higher than the ambient temperature. Heat pumps work best at lower, consistent temperatures. Radiators must put out as much heat as possible without becoming too hot.

Key point:

Radiator size matters more than radiator age.

In many older houses, the radiators are already big. Cast iron or double-panel radiators CAN work well with a heat pump if they are sized accurately.

When a heat pump with old radiators struggles, it’s usually because:

  • Radiators were never checked against heat loss
  • Rooms were assumed to be “fine as they are”
  • The system was forced to compensate for higher temperatures

A fair survey should compare the heat loss from each room with the radiator output at heat pump temperatures. Some rooms may need upgrades. Others may not.

Want to understand radiator sizing properly?

We break this down clearly in our dedicated guide.

“Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.”

Do You Need to Replace All Radiators in an Old House?

Energy-efficient heat pump and radiator setup by Aventus Eco in Scotland.

No, and for most people, replacing everything “just in case” is overkill.

Radiator upgrades should be targeted, not blanket. In many older homes, only specific areas require updating. These are usually spaces with:

  • High external wall exposure
  • Large windows
  • Smaller radiators compared to the room size

What radiators work with heat pumps?

  • Larger surface area radiators
  • Existing oversized units
  • Upgraded units only where heat loss demands it

There are few, if any, radiators that are “too big” for a heat pump. Larger radiators can deliver lower flow temperatures, which is better for performance AND comfort.

Not sure which rooms need changes?

A proper radiator and heat loss review removes guesswork.

Insulation vs System Design: What Actually Moves the Needle

Description of modern outdoor heat pump systems for renewable energy solutions in Scotland.

Homeowners are often advised that they must fully insulate an old house before a heat pump will operate. This advice freezes people and keeps them from moving.

The truth is more straightforward.

Insulation helps, but system design is more important.

A heat pump in an existing house works when the system matches the building’s actual heat losses. Insulating will lower demand, but not the importance of sizing, checking radiators, or commissioning.

The most gains, in older and traditional homes, often come from:

  • Accurate heat loss calculations
  • Correct emitter sizing
  • Stable, low flow temperature operation

Simple measures such as loft insulation or draught-proofing can also make a difference, but full wall insulation may not be necessary. Given that, in some properties, insulation has a limited effect on performance compared to a sound, systemic installation.

The right approach is balance. Upgrade insulation when it makes sense, but do NOT obviously postpone a heat pump solely because a house isn’t “perfect”.

What changes are actually worth doing?

A survey shows what will make a real difference for your home.

“Great experience from start to finish, excellent customer service and a job well done !”

How Warm Does an Old House Feel With a Heat Pump?

Outdoor heat pump unit with black fan grill and white casing, installed on a building exterior.

This is a question of comfort, not numbers.

A heat pump heats a house differently from a boiler. And unlike short jabs of high heat, it delivers a steady, even warmth all day.

And in an old house, it often feels better this way.

Rooms never get too hot. Cold corners improve. Floors feel warmer. There are fewer flashes, even of hot and cold.

People sometimes fear the house will feel “cooler” because radiators are not as hot to the touch. That doesn’t mean, however, that the room is colder. That means more gentle, continuous heat delivery.

For many homes, the existing comfort is already enhanced for:

  • Heat is more evenly distributed
  • The system would run longer at lower temperatures
  • Cycling occurs, but rooms no longer get cold

Any well-designed heat pump can keep an old house as warm as a boiler can, and usually more comfortably.

Wondering how a heat pump will actually feel day to day?

Aventus Eco can assess your home’s layout, radiators, and heat loss to confirm whether a heat pump will deliver steady, comfortable warmth in your existing property.

Common Reasons Heat Pumps Fail in Old Homes (And How to Avoid Them)

Properly installed heat pump units outside homes in Scotland.

The bulk of the problems attributed to a heat pump stem from mistakes that could have been avoided. The house is rarely the problem.

The most common causes of failure in old homes are:

No heat loss calculation

Without room-by-room data, systems are guessed rather than designed.

Radiators not checked properly

Rooms are considered decent without testing output at heat pump temps.

Flow temperatures set too high

Thereby lowering efficiency and increasing operating costs.

Poor commissioning

The settings are not correct. They remain generic rather than tailored to the property.

They work if you install them properly.

Time, experience, and proper evaluations help avoid these issues. Shortcuts always reveal problems over time.

Want to avoid the mistakes that cause poor performance?

Aventus Eco carries out full heat loss calculations and system checks to make sure your heat pump is designed properly from the start.

How to Know if Your Old House Is Suitable

Image of a Vaillant heat pump installed outdoors, showcasing renewable heating technology in Scottish homes and businesses.

A proper suitability check includes:

  • Whole-house heat loss calculations
  • Room-by-room radiator assessment
  • Review of your current pipework and location
  • An open assessment of what will and won’t work

This is the process by which we replace assumptions with facts.

Before installing a heat pump in an older home, consider:

  • Whether the radiators are sufficient
  • Where upgrades may be needed
  • How the system will operate day to day

That clarity removes the risk and sets realistic expectations.

Need a clear answer for your own home?

Aventus Eco can carry out a full suitability survey to confirm whether a heat pump will work in your old house and what, if anything, needs to change.

The Right Way Forward for Old & Existing Homes in Scotland

High-efficiency Vaillant heat pumps installed outdoors in Scotland.

Heat pumps have no problem with old houses. Poor assumptions are.

It’s not about age, wall type, or radiator style. Heat losses, system design and commissioning do. If these are done well, heating an old or existing home with air-source heat pumps can be comfortable and consistent.

The correct approach is simple:

  • Assess first
  • Design to the house
  • Upgrade only where needed

This is to avoid wasting time and stave off potential disappointment. It also provides clarity before you decide.

If you want certainty, not guesswork, begin with the proper checks.

Want clear advice based on your home, not averages?

Aventus Eco carries out full heat loss and system assessments to confirm whether a heat pump is right for your old or existing property.

“We’ve had very attentive customer service from Sean, and are very happy with the outcome of the installation of solar panels & batteries. We are also grateful for his knowledge and input into adjusting our heat pump and currently our bills are massively reduced.”

Modern renewable energy heat pump installed outdoors in Scotland.

If you are living in a home, old or new, the question should not be “Can I have a heat pump?”

The only real question is “Will it be designed properly for my home?”

Aventus Eco evaluates traditional housing, old and new, throughout Scotland. You will receive straightforward answers, candid opinions, and no-nonsense direction before any commitment.

Many of these properties upgrade heating and generation together: that is the full renewables package.

If you want to know what heat loss, radiators, and real-life performance mean in your home, here’s the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Modern Vaillant heat pump for energy-efficient heating solutions.

Can you install an air-source heat pump in an old house?

Yes. Whether an air-source heat pump can be fitted to an old house depends on the house’s heat loss, the radiators, and the system layout. It is not dependent on the age of the premises. Performance is only a matter of proper sizing and system design, not the year the home was built.

Are heat pumps suitable for Victorian houses?

Heat pumps are viable options for Victorian houses, provided they are designed to match the building’s heat loss and layout. High ceilings and solid walls increase heat demand, but this can easily be accommodated by correctly sized radiators and generous running. Most Victorian homes are fine following an assessment.

Will a heat pump work with existing radiators?

If existing radiators offer sufficient surface area at lower temperatures, a heat pump can be used with them. The radiators do not have to be new, but they must be the right size. We determine this by assessing each radiator individually.

Do I need to replace all my radiators?

No. Some rooms in most homes need an upgrade, not the whole house. Radiator upgrades should be based on careful assessment, not assumptions. Most existing radiators are adequate and may only require minor adjustments.

How do I know if my house is suitable for a heat pump?

The only dependable way is a full suitability survey. This ranges from a house-wide heat-loss assessment, radiator examination, and evaluation of your current system. Online advice cannot verify this about your home.

Will a heat pump heat my whole house?

Yes, when designed correctly. A heat pump is a whole-home heating system, not a room-specific one. Home heating provides a fresh, warm environment in your home without the chill of cold areas that older homes are left with.

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

We wanted to retrofit our home to improve energy efficiency, change to an air source heat pump (ASHP) and add solar panels and a battery. Aventus Eco was recommended by a Retrofit Consultancy. Sean clearly explained and planned out the processes for our ASHP. We really felt that he was interested to make it work well for us. Installation was smooth. The team was well coordinated and communicated well during the process. They completed the work to a very high standard and minimised any disruption to our home. We were so impressed with the ASHP fitting that we quickly followed this up with Aventus Eco planning and installing our solar panels and battery. We would highly recommend Sean and the Aventus Eco team.

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.

Sean and the team at Aventus Eco did a fantastic job installing our air source heat pump. They were really friendly, proactive and efficient throughout the whole process. After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits. The installation itself was carried out with real care and professionalism. The team put everything back in place afterwards and left the house as though they had never been there. Since the instal, the house now constantly feels like it is at a comfortable temperature, and the amount of energy we use on a daily basis compared to our old electric boiler has been reduced. We are looking forward to seeing how this continues in the colder months. We would happily recommend Aventus Eco and Sean to anyone considering an air source heat pump.

Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.

Fantastic service from Sean. Extremely knowledgeable about energy efficiency. Customer service has been amazing from start to finish including checking after a few weeks in to make sure everything was perfect. A level of aftercare I haven’t experienced anywhere else.

Aventus Eco installed solar panels and a battery and all went like clockwork. Now running virtually all day on a few £ of off peak electricity (Octopus) and the rest is solar feeding into the battery. Very pleased with the result and the thorough job done by Aventus Eco.

After having several companies provide quotes for solar panels for my husband and me, Aventus ECO was by far the best. Their team was professional, transparent, and most importantly, there was no high-pressure sales pitch at all!

We initially had Sean over to provide a quote, and as we didn’t know much about heat pumps, he explained everything clearly and in a way we could easily understand. He emphasized the importance of proper heat loss calculations for our property, which helped us determine which existing radiators we could keep. Sean also walked us through how the system would operate once installed and shared tips on how to get the best efficiency from it. When the team came to install the system, the entire process was incredibly streamlined and completed in just three days. The guys made sure to cover all our carpets and left the place spotless. I can honestly say Sean and his team were fantastic—our heat pump is now up and running, and even on the coldest days, our energy usage is nearly half compared to gas. Although we’ve needed to tweak a few settings, Sean took the time to show us exactly how to adjust everything. I would highly recommend him and his team to anyone. In fact, we’ve already referred him to our neighbors, and he’s now working on their system too. Thanks again, Sean and team

We had an excellent experience with Sean and his team at Aventus Eco. They recently installed our air source heat pump and hot water system, and Sean was hands-on throughout the entire process. What really stood out was the additional guidance Sean provided about how we could improve our home’s insulation and reduce drafts. He explained how making these simple DIY improvements would help lower the heat loss in our home, ultimately reducing our energy bills in the long run. Sean’s approach was practical and cost-conscious, giving us great tips for upgrades that we could do ourselves to make the system even more efficient. The level of detail and care he put into both the installation and the advice was impressive. It’s clear that Aventus Eco is dedicated to not just installing systems, but making sure they perform at their best for the customer. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome and would definitely recommend Aventus Eco to anyone looking for a reliable, knowledgeable, and customer-focused company.

Aventus Eco is hands down the best company I’ve worked with in a long time. From the first phone call, I knew I was in good hands. Sean took the time to understand my needs and walked me through the entire process, from initial consultation to installation day. What really stood out to me was how well they communicated — I always knew what was happening and when. There were no surprises, and the installation was done ahead of schedule! The heat pump has been running flawlessly, and I’ve already noticed a drop in my energy bills. I highly recommend Sean and his team for their professionalism and efficiency!

I recently had an air source heat pump installed by Aventus Eco, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Sean was my main point of contact, and he was fantastic. He walked me through the entire process from start to finish, explaining everything clearly and making sure I understood what to expect. On the day of the installation, the team showed up on time and got straight to work. They were professional and efficient, and the whole installation went smoothly. They took the time to ensure everything was set up correctly and even cleaned up after themselves, leaving no mess behind. The heat pump itself is working great, and I’ve already noticed a difference in my home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Overall, I’m really pleased with the service from Aventus Eco and would definitely recommend them to others. Thanks again to Sean and the whole team!
