So where do the real noise complaints come from? Three places, all installer issues:

Poor positioning against echoing surfaces. An outdoor unit installed 30cm from a render wall in a tight courtyard will amplify its noise by 5 to 10dB through reflection. The same unit positioned with proper clearance and absorbent surroundings is inaudible from inside the property.

That said, we do see brand-level patterns in the field:

Octopus / Daikin combinations. Octopus is the highest-volume installer in the UK and they use Daikin units predominantly. The Daikin Altherma is a capable system. The problem is the volume install process: 1 to 2 day turnaround, often undersized cylinders, weather compensation set to factory defaults rather than tuned to the property, customer training compressed into a 15-minute handover. We see Octopus heat pump complaints regularly. The unit itself is rarely at fault.

Mitsubishi Ecodan. Probably the most-installed UK heat pump brand. Reliable units, but installer quality varies hugely. We’ve seen Ecodan installations that perform beautifully and Ecodan installations that run twice the expected cost. The unit isn’t the variable. The design is.

NIBE and Vaillant. Premium European brands. When fitted properly, they’re the best on the market in terms of efficiency and long-term reliability. When fitted badly, they’re expensive to correct. We fit Vaillant aroTHERM plus as our standard because the modulation range, the 7-year warranty, and the parts availability are all excellent.

Grant. A common UK brand, often fitted in rural off-gas properties. Capable units. Design quality of installations is the main variable.

Mid-tier brands (Midea, Dimplex, Waterkotte). Mixed picture. Some are perfectly capable units paired with under-trained installer networks. Some have spec issues that mean correction work is harder than with the major brands.

Hybrid heat pumps (any brand). These pair a smaller heat pump with the existing gas boiler. They work, but they’re not eligible for HES grant funding and the long-term economics are weaker than a full retrofit in most cases.

The recurring message from this list: the brand is real but it’s secondary. A Heat Geek-accredited Mitsubishi installation is going to outperform a budget Vaillant installation almost every time. Choose the installer, not the brand.

How to Tell if a Heat Pump Is Right for Your Specific Property

A heat pump is the right call for your property when these five conditions are reasonably met:

1. Your property has insulation in roughly the right places. Loft insulation, cavity wall (where applicable), reasonable double glazing. Not perfect. Reasonable. If the property is single-skin sandstone with no loft insulation, the conversation gets harder. If it’s anything from “OK insulated” upwards, you’re fine.

2. You have outdoor space at the rear or side for the unit. Roughly 1m x 1m of clearance, plus a wall to fix the brackets to. Most Scottish properties have this. Top-floor tenement flats without rear access are the main exception.

3. Your existing radiator system is reasonable, not all microbore. Microbore plumbing (8mm or 10mm pipework typical of 1970s-2000s UK builds) is a complication. Doesn’t make a heat pump impossible, but it means more pipework rework. A survey will tell you how much of your system is microbore.

4. You own the property. The HES grant requires owner-occupier status. Landlord installations have a separate funding route via the Private Rented Sector Landlord Loan, but the criteria differ.

1. Very poorly insulated property where the insulation upgrade isn’t on the cards. If your property has no loft insulation, no cavity wall insulation, and you’re not willing or able to address that before the heat pump install, the running costs will disappoint.
