What the app actually shows you, how to connect it to your Internet Gateway, and what to check before you call us, from the engineer who fits it.

Sean gets the same call two or three weeks after almost every heat pump install: the homeowner has downloaded an app, poked around for ten minutes, and wants to know what half the screen actually means. That is normal. A heat pump hands you more live information than a gas boiler ever did, and nobody hands you a manual for the app itself.
Short answer: download the app that matches your heat pump’s brand, myVAILLANT for most Aventus installs, connect it to the Internet Gateway we leave wired in near your consumer unit, and log in with the account set up at commissioning. From there the app shows live flow and outside temperature, lets you set a weekly heating schedule, and boosts hot water on demand.
Check the badge on the outdoor unit before you download anything. Most Aventus heat pump installs are Vaillant aroTHERM plus units, which pair with myVAILLANT, Vaillant’s current smart control app. Some Vaillant systems, older ones and a few newer ones alongside the app, also carry a wall-mounted sensoHOME controller, a physical thermostat rather than a phone app. The two do different jobs, and having one does not mean you can skip the other if your install includes it.
Panasonic Aquarea heat pumps, which we also fit, run on Aquarea Smart Cloud: look for the sticker with the QR code on the indoor unit’s casing and scan it for the right download link, rather than searching an app store and guessing. Mitsubishi Ecodan systems use MELCloud, an older interface that still does the same basic job of scheduling, boosting and monitoring. Daikin systems run on Onecta. The app on its own does nothing. It needs an Internet Gateway, a small white box we wire in near your consumer unit or heat pump controls, that bridges your home Wi-Fi to the heat pump’s own control bus. We connect this at commissioning and leave the network name and login details with you, so the first login should already work without any setup on your part.
If you have changed your Wi-Fi router or password since your install, the Gateway needs re-pairing: open myVAILLANT, add the device again from the account menu, and follow the prompts to rejoin it to your new network. It takes a couple of minutes and does not need an engineer, though most people call us the first time rather than trust themselves with it, which is understandable given what a wrong step can look like on the app’s error screen.

Ignore most of the dashboard the first few times you open it. Two numbers matter: flow temperature, the water temperature leaving the heat pump on its way to your radiators or underfloor loops, and outside temperature, which the app reads from a sensor near the outdoor unit. A well set up system on a Scottish winter day runs a flow temperature somewhere in the 35 to 45°C range; if you see it running much higher for long stretches, that is worth a service call rather than something to just watch.
The app also shows weather compensation, a curve that raises flow temperature automatically as it gets colder outside, so you are not manually adjusting anything through a cold snap. This is the setting most homeowners never touch after commissioning, and it is doing most of the actual efficiency work behind the scenes.
A heat pump does not like being switched on and off the way a boiler does. It works better run gently for longer, holding a steady temperature rather than firing hard to recover from a cold house. The schedule screen in myVAILLANT lets you set different target temperatures by time block across the week, and this is where most of the real saving sits, not in dropping the overall target by a degree.
Set it around when the house is actually occupied rather than a generic 7am to 11pm block copied from a boiler routine: a lower overnight setback of 2 to 3°C, held rather than switched off completely, then a small rise before the household wakes rather than a jump. If your work pattern changes week to week, the app supports a different schedule per day rather than one flat week, which most people never discover because nobody points it out at handover.
An engineer can review your weekly schedule against your flow temperature data and adjust it properly, not guess from the app alone.

Hot water usually runs on its own schedule, separate from heating, warming the cylinder to a set temperature once or twice a day rather than continuously. If you have guests staying, or want extra hot water outside the normal cycle, the boost function heats the cylinder immediately from the app, without touching the underlying schedule.
Holiday mode drops the whole system to a low frost-protection setting while you are away, which matters more in Scotland than in milder parts of the UK. An empty property with the heating off entirely for a fortnight in January risks frozen pipework; holiday mode keeps the property just warm enough without running the full schedule for nobody.
Most connection problems trace back to the Internet Gateway, not the heat pump itself. Check the small light on the Gateway box first: solid usually means connected, flashing usually means it is trying to reconnect, and off means it has lost power, worth checking at the fuse before anything else. A router restart fixes more of these than people expect, because the Gateway sometimes needs your network to come back before it reconnects on its own.
If the app shows the heat pump as offline but the house is warm and the system is clearly running, that is a communication fault between the Gateway and the app, not a heating fault, and it is safe to leave until you have time to deal with it. The app logs flow temperature, outside temperature and runtime, more information than most people know what to do with, but it is genuinely useful for one thing: spotting when your system is working harder than it should. A flow temperature that creeps up over a few weeks with no change in the weather usually means something in the system, a dirty filter, an air lock, a stuck valve, needs a look.
