Key takeaways

Radiator size is one factor that matters more with heat pumps than with any other heating system. With this in mind, many homeowners ask the same question early in the process: how much larger do heat pump radiators need to be? It’s a good question! Heat pumps work in a very different way from gas boilers , so there’s a change in radiator performance when flow temperatures drop.

This guide explains heat pump radiator sizing in no-nonsense terms. It focuses on air-source heat pump radiator sizing, as this is the most common system in Scotland. Do I need new radiators with a heat pump? This question is answered, along with the size they need and what actually affects performance in your home.

This guide provides the facts without guesswork. The goal is simple: ensure you understand radiator requirements before committing to a heat pump installation and system that must operate efficiently for the next few decades.

How Heat Pumps Work With Radiators

Heat pump supplying radiators in a residential property, illustrating efficient heat transfer through a modern low-temperature heating system

Heat pumps heat homes differently from gas boilers. A boiler burns fuel and sends very hot water to radiators in short, intense bursts. A heat pump moves heat from the outside air and delivers it at a relatively low temperature. The system runs for extended periods with all active components.

This difference changes how radiators behave.

Heat pump radiators “run at peak” because they are warm for longer instead of very hot for a shorter time. The key difference is surface area, rather than dissemination at peak temperature. Bigger radiators release more heat per unit of effort than smaller radiators, so the hot-water flow must be warmer.

This is why sizing heat pump radiators is essential. A radiator must release sufficient heat into the space without requiring the heat pump to work harder, which would increase energy consumption.

In this case, people often wonder, “How do heat pumps work with radiators?” Or “How hot are heat pump radiators?” The answer is that they feel warm, not hot. The radiator reaches the target temperature because heat pumps operate continuously and evenly.

Proper sizing can keep the target site content while reducing radiant temperatures for cost-effective heating operations.

How Much Bigger Do Heat Pump Radiators Need to Be?

Comparison of larger radiators used with heat pumps in homes, highlighting increased surface area for efficient low-temperature heating

This is the most common question regarding heat pump radiator sizing. And it deserves a straight answer.

In many homes, heat pumps require larger radiators than boiler radiators. A common rule of thumb is to ask for a 20-50% increase in radiator output. This does not mean every radiator must be physically larger. This means each room must be able to generate sufficient heat at lower water temperatures.

The actual increase value depends on too many things. The quality of insulation. The size of the room. The height of the ceiling. And the heat loss through the walls, windows, or floors.

A well-insulated room may require minimal changes. A room with a higher heat load will require a larger radiator or an additional emitter. That is why there is no straightforward answer to how much bigger heat pump radiators need to be.

Many online sources are overly simplistic. They use high temperatures or neglect room-by-room heat loss. Such an approach results in systems that operate unnecessarily.

Accurate output of heat pump radiator sizes enables proper matching of radiator production to the heat pump’s designed flow temperature.

Oversized Radiators for Heat Pumps: When Bigger Pays Off

Professionally planned radiator sizing matched to a residential heat pump system for optimal comfort and efficiency

Oversized radiators sound like a mistake, but with a heat pump they describe a deliberate design choice: fitting radiators with more surface area than the room needs at boiler temperatures, so the system can run cooler for the same warmth.

Undersized radiators show themselves quickly. Rooms that never quite reach temperature, a heat pump running flat out for long stretches, radiators that feel hot rather than comfortably warm, and running costs above what was quoted are all classic signs that the emitters, not the heat pump, are the bottleneck.

Oversizing pays back when it lets you drop the flow temperature. A system designed around 45°C instead of 55°C uses noticeably less electricity, and the one-off cost of larger panels is small against years of lower bills. The rooms that matter most are the ones you heat all day: living rooms, kitchens, home offices.

There is a limit. Beyond a certain point extra surface area stops buying meaningful efficiency, and wall space, looks and budget all push back. The right answer comes from a room-by-room heat loss calculation, not from fitting the biggest panel the wall can take.

If your current radiators were sized generously to begin with, you may already own oversized emitters in heat pump terms. That is one of the most common findings in our surveys of Scottish homes, and it is why we check before recommending any replacements.

Do your radiators need upsizing?

Book a room-by-room heat loss check and find out which radiators, if any, need to change.

“Sean’s professionalism, technical expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile truly set him apart. He is an absolute superstar, and I can’t recommend Aventus Eco Ltd highly enough for anyone facing similar challenges.”

Do You Always Need New Radiators With a Heat Pump?

Existing household radiators paired with a newly installed heat pump, showing when upgrades may or may not be required

Do you always need new radiators with a heat pump? No.

It is one of the most massive misunderstandings in heat pump projects. Many of the current radiators have sufficient surface area for low-temperature heating. But the only way to know for sure is through a proper assessment.

When people ask, “Do I need new radiators with a heat pump?” the correct answer is: sometimes

Existing radiators may be suitable if:

  • The room heat loss is low
  • The radiator is already oversized
  • The system runs at an efficient flow temperature

Upgrades are recommended when:

  • Rooms fail to reach target temperature
  • Radiators require higher flow temperatures
  • Comfort drops during colder weather

That is why an engineer conducts room-by-room evaluations. For example, one room is suitable as is, but a larger radiator is required for another. Such a pattern allows for minimising unnecessary replacements and maintaining the efficiency of the entire system.

Questions such as “What radiators for a heat pump?” or “What radiators do I need with a heat pump?” emphasise output over appearance. Appropriate panel radiators with sufficient surface area are commonly utilised. The focus stays on heat delivery, not radiator style.

Appropriate sizing reduces heat pump stress, enhances comfort, and, over the long term, lowers electricity costs.

Want certainty before replacing radiators unnecessarily?

Get clear guidance based on heat loss, not assumptions, so you only change what truly needs changing.

“They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly.”

Radiator Sizing for Air Source Heat Pumps

Correctly sized radiators and air source heat pump installations in a residential setting, designed for balanced heat output

Scotland primarily uses air-source heat pumps among alternative system types. It relates to the climate, the existing housing stock, and the grid accessibility.

These systems operate reliably when the flow temperature is not too high, which is why the presentation on air-source heat pump radiator sizing includes a separate section. The boiler typically runs between 60 and 75 °C, and the radiator must be able to dissipate the required heat at that flow temperature.

The answer to what radiators to use with an air source heat pump or what size radiators for an air source heat pump always begins with heat loss. Each room has a unique heat-loss rate, expressed in kW. Therefore, the radiator must output enough heat to match the room’s heat loss.

Common mistakes include:

  • Using a single radiator size across multiple rooms
  • Ignoring ceiling height and external walls
  • Raising the flow temperature instead of increasing the radiator output

Proper air source heat pump radiator sizing should maintain the flow temperature low. It will preserve the system’s effectiveness and the equipment’s lifespan, and keep operational costs at the same level.

Want to check your radiators suit an air source heat pump?

Get a proper assessment that matches radiator output to flow temperature, room by room.

How Hot Do Radiators Get With a Heat Pump?

Modern radiator styles designed for heat pump systems, showing clean finishes and increased panel sizes=

Radiator temperature is a common concern for many homeowners who believe that hot radiators are the ones that touch. However, this perception changes with heat pumps.

People wonder how hot do radiators get with a heat pump or how hot do heat pump radiators get. The answer is simple: radiators feel warm but not hot.

A heat pump warms the home at a lower surface temperature. This fact does not mean lower temperatures inside the house. When heated steadily, a radiator stays warm for a long time, avoiding the “hot peak” typical in standard heating systems.

The only issue is an inadequate radiator size. In this case, the radiator system struggles to warm up at a low-temperature heat supply. To maintain the ratio, the heat pump increases the flow temperature, reducing efficiency.

This shift in how heat feels often surprises new heat pump owners. Once experienced, most owners become accustomed to a steady, warm room, unlike the “hot peak” associated with conventional heating.

Concerned that lower radiator temperatures mean less comfort?

What Heat Pump Radiators Look Like

Modern radiator styles designed for heat pump systems, showing clean finishes and increased panel sizes=

Many homeowners worry about how larger radiators will impact the feel of their home. It is a common concern. However, you should not worry about having contemporary heat pump radiators. They do not stick out or look industrial.

Most systems use standard steel panel radiators. These are what most UK boilers use today. They are panel radiators slightly wider and/or taller than contemporary boiler radiators, yet they remain flush to the wall.

People always want to know what do heat pump radiators look like and what do air source heat pump radiators look like. The answer is that they look like modern radiators; you already know them.

In rare cases, other options can be utilised. When wall space is at a premium, vertical radiators deliver higher output without increasing floor space. Fan-assisted radiators can also provide higher output at lower flow temperatures, but they are used infrequently.

Never choose a radiator based on just appearance. Output should always take precedence. Good design integrates performance and form; comfort improves without jeopardising the room’s feel or use.

Why Online Calculators Get Radiator Sizing Wrong

Side-by-side comparison of incorrectly sized radiators and professionally assessed heat pump radiator setups in residential properties

The first thing that most homeowners turn to is an online tool for estimating heat pump radiator sizing. Unfortunately, these tools aren’t the most reliable.

They only consider room size and ignore insulation, window type (single- or double-glazing), window material, ceiling height, and air leakage. They use temperatures that are standard for buildings on air conditioners and not suitable for heat pumps.

They use the same rules for all rooms. Therefore, a living room with two external walls and a small one with only one external wall has the same heat. But this heat is lost in different rooms.

On these resources, the stated flow temperature is often incorrect. The output voltage of the radiators is suitable, but their output voltage is not, because the operating temperatures are underestimated in the resources.

Only a thorough survey can perfectly solve the problem. A proper assessment measures real heat loss and matches radiator output to the planned flow temperature. This prevents system strain and later comfort issues.

The Right Way to Size Radiators for a Heat Pump

Professionally planned radiator sizing matched to a residential heat pump system for optimal comfort and efficiency

The proper approach to sizing the heat pump radiator depends on the input. The input here includes the heat loss for each room. Heat loss can be calculated based on the insulation, room layout, or exposure.

Next, radiators are selected to provide output at the projected flow temperature. It ensures each room consumes only the required amount of energy.

This method provides an answer to common questions, such as which radiators to use with a heat pump, in an unambiguous manner. The technique is therefore unambiguous. It rules out speculation. Ultimately, it does not compromise efficiency.

Not all radiators need to be upgraded. Once others are in use, the collective energy system redesign is complete. It is possible to reduce reliance on electricity. It is possible to utilise the entire space more effectively. And the whole system’s health is preserved.

Radiator sizing is one half of the calculation: the heat pump itself must be sized from the same numbers. Our heat pump sizing guide explains the heat loss method installers use.

Ready to size radiators the right way?

“We initially had Sean over to provide a quote, and as we didn’t know much about heat pumps, he explained everything clearly and in a way we could easily understand. Heat Pump Radiator Sizing FAQs

Heat pump supplying radiators in a residential property, illustrating efficient heat transfer through a modern low-temperature heating system

How much bigger do heat pump radiators need to be?

As a rule of thumb, radiators working with a heat pump need roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times the surface area of radiators sized for a gas boiler, because the water running through them is cooler. The exact factor comes from a room-by-room heat loss calculation, not a blanket multiplier: a well-insulated room may need no change at all.

What are oversized radiators?

Oversized radiators are emitters chosen with more surface area than the room strictly needs at the design flow temperature. With a heat pump, that extra area lets the system run cooler for the same room temperature, which raises efficiency and cuts running costs.

Do I need to replace all my radiators for a heat pump?

Rarely. In most Scottish homes only some radiators need changing, and many need none. A proper survey identifies the rooms where the existing radiator cannot deliver the required heat at low flow temperatures; those are the only ones worth replacing.

Are bigger radiators worth it with a heat pump?

Usually, yes. Every degree you can lower the flow temperature improves the heat pump’s efficiency, and larger radiators are what make lower flow temperatures possible. The saving compounds over the life of the system, while the extra cost of a larger panel at install time is modest.

Still unsure about your radiators?

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.

Sean and the team at Aventus Eco did a fantastic job installing our air source heat pump. They were really friendly, proactive and efficient throughout the whole process. After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits. The installation itself was carried out with real care and professionalism. The team put everything back in place afterwards and left the house as though they had never been there. Since the instal, the house now constantly feels like it is at a comfortable temperature, and the amount of energy we use on a daily basis compared to our old electric boiler has been reduced. We are looking forward to seeing how this continues in the colder months. We would happily recommend Aventus Eco and Sean to anyone considering an air source heat pump.

Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.

After calling many companies and having an electrician come and wrongly replace our fit meter Sean could not have been more helpful. He took the time to help, explained everything so well despite it being a small job. He arranged for an electrican to come and checked in afterwards. I couldn't rate him higher, we are very grateful for his help.

Fantastic service from Sean. Extremely knowledgeable about energy efficiency. Customer service has been amazing from start to finish including checking after a few weeks in to make sure everything was perfect. A level of aftercare I haven’t experienced anywhere else.

Aventus Eco installed solar panels and a battery and all went like clockwork. Now running virtually all day on a few £ of off peak electricity (Octopus) and the rest is solar feeding into the battery. Very pleased with the result and the thorough job done by Aventus Eco.

After having several companies provide quotes for solar panels for my husband and me, Aventus ECO was by far the best. Their team was professional, transparent, and most importantly, there was no high-pressure sales pitch at all!

We initially had Sean over to provide a quote, and as we didn’t know much about heat pumps, he explained everything clearly and in a way we could easily understand. He emphasized the importance of proper heat loss calculations for our property, which helped us determine which existing radiators we could keep. Sean also walked us through how the system would operate once installed and shared tips on how to get the best efficiency from it. When the team came to install the system, the entire process was incredibly streamlined and completed in just three days. The guys made sure to cover all our carpets and left the place spotless. I can honestly say Sean and his team were fantastic—our heat pump is now up and running, and even on the coldest days, our energy usage is nearly half compared to gas. Although we’ve needed to tweak a few settings, Sean took the time to show us exactly how to adjust everything. I would highly recommend him and his team to anyone. In fact, we’ve already referred him to our neighbors, and he’s now working on their system too. Thanks again, Sean and team

We had an excellent experience with Sean and his team at Aventus Eco. They recently installed our air source heat pump and hot water system, and Sean was hands-on throughout the entire process. What really stood out was the additional guidance Sean provided about how we could improve our home’s insulation and reduce drafts. He explained how making these simple DIY improvements would help lower the heat loss in our home, ultimately reducing our energy bills in the long run. Sean’s approach was practical and cost-conscious, giving us great tips for upgrades that we could do ourselves to make the system even more efficient. The level of detail and care he put into both the installation and the advice was impressive. It’s clear that Aventus Eco is dedicated to not just installing systems, but making sure they perform at their best for the customer. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome and would definitely recommend Aventus Eco to anyone looking for a reliable, knowledgeable, and customer-focused company.

Aventus Eco is hands down the best company I’ve worked with in a long time. From the first phone call, I knew I was in good hands. Sean took the time to understand my needs and walked me through the entire process, from initial consultation to installation day. What really stood out to me was how well they communicated — I always knew what was happening and when. There were no surprises, and the installation was done ahead of schedule! The heat pump has been running flawlessly, and I’ve already noticed a drop in my energy bills. I highly recommend Sean and his team for their professionalism and efficiency!

I recently had an air source heat pump installed by Aventus Eco, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Sean was my main point of contact, and he was fantastic. He walked me through the entire process from start to finish, explaining everything clearly and making sure I understood what to expect. On the day of the installation, the team showed up on time and got straight to work. They were professional and efficient, and the whole installation went smoothly. They took the time to ensure everything was set up correctly and even cleaned up after themselves, leaving no mess behind. The heat pump itself is working great, and I’ve already noticed a difference in my home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Overall, I’m really pleased with the service from Aventus Eco and would definitely recommend them to others. Thanks again to Sean and the whole team!
