Replacing a boiler with a heat pump is now a realistic option for many Scottish homeowners. Some are looking to replace their gas boilers with heat pumps as energy prices rise. Others wish to replace an oil boiler with a heat pump because they are growing tired of being off the gas grid. As systems age, many households also intend to replace their combi boiler with a heat pump.
This guide is for those changing a boiler in an existing Scottish property. As with most big household expenses, it pays to do some research before jumping on a new trend or replacing something that works perfectly well. It explains whether a replacement is possible, what modifications may be needed, the expected cost, and when it makes financial sense.
If you’re looking to understand the options for boiler replacement with a heat pump and need clear advice and guidance specific to homes in Scotland, this article will guide you through the decision point by point.
Yes. In most cases, you can replace a boiler with a heat pump in Scotland. That would encompass the gas, oil, and combi boilers in existing homes.
A common question among homeowners: “Can I replace my boiler with a heat pump?” It’s a matter of the building, not the fuel. If the home can be heated at lower water temperatures, a heat pump can replace a boiler.
You can replace a gas boiler with a heat pump in Scotland. This is typical in gas grid-connected properties. The heat pump meets all the heating and hot water requirements. It could be sealed off if the gas supply is no longer needed.
You can swap out an oil boiler for a heat pump. This is frequently a solid choice for off-grid homes. Many homes heated with oil already have larger radiators and lower flow temperatures, which are compatible with heat pump operation.
A combi boiler can be substituted for a heat pump. Hot water is stored in a cylinder heated by heat pumps, rather than being instant as in standard installations. Cylinder clearance is considered during the survey to ensure a smooth installation.
You do not need a new build to install a heat pump instead of an old boiler. Most older Scottish homes can be connected to the new system. If your central heating’s not working, here are some key checks: insulation, heat loss, and radiator output.
A boiler is a device that heats water quickly to high temperatures. A heat pump supplies a more constant heat and draws energy efficiently even when the outdoor air is cold. That heat has to stay in the home to remain comfortable.
A professional survey tells you if you can replace your boiler with a heat pump and what measures are required for reliable performance.
Speak with Aventus Eco and arrange a boiler replacement survey. A proper assessment confirms suitability, system size, and any upgrades required before you commit.
“Brilliant service would use again.”

Swapping a gas boiler for a heat pump is now standard throughout Scotland. Many homeowners do it because gas prices remain volatile and future regulations are biased toward low-carbon heating.
The boiler is completely replaced by a heat pump. It provides heating and hot water to the space from the same system. The gas meter can be retained for cooking or removed entirely if no longer required, depending on the household design.
Homes with already good insulation generally fare well following a replacement. Radiator size matters. Lower flow temperatures in heat pumps mean some radiators will need to be upgraded to maintain comfort.
Pipework usually remains in place. The principal differences are fitting an outdoor unit and adding a hot water cylinder if the current boiler is a combi system.
You are most likely to benefit from a gas boiler replacement if:
An accurate heat loss survey will tell if the replacement will operate efficiently and what changes need to be made.
Aventus Eco can assess your home, confirm radiator suitability, and explain the full replacement process before any commitment.
“You would have to look far and wide to find a Company as helpful as Aventus Eco . Sean from Aventus was able to face time my dad and talk him through concerns about how his air source heat pump was performing during cold weather . We…

Replacing an oil boiler with a heat pump is often easier than replacing a gas boiler. Many homes heated by oil are already suitable for heat pumps, as their existing radiators and flow temperatures are generally compatible.
Oil systems are widespread in rural and semi-rural Scotland. Fuel costs can change sharply. Deliveries require planning. A heat pump removes that reliance, and its running costs remain constant.
Oil boiler replacement also restores space. Once the system is fully electric, you can remove the oil tank. This may enhance garden design or open up the driveway.
Many oil-heated homes already have a hot water cylinder, so the changes within the house can be modest. The heat pump outside replaces the oil boiler as the primary heating source.
Oil boiler replacement is a good option when:
If you rely on oil heating and want a long-term alternative, Aventus Eco can assess whether a heat pump will deliver lower running costs and steady heat in your property.
“Sean’s professionalism, technical expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile truly set him apart. He is an absolute superstar, and I can’t recommend Aventus Eco Ltd highly enough for anyone facing similar challenges.”

Homes that are off the gas grid can often benefit most from swapping a boiler for a heat pump. These properties generally use oil, LPG, or electric resistance heating, resulting in high running costs.
A heat pump is a more efficient electricity consumer. For each unit of power consumed, it delivers many units of heat. This means better cost control and less vulnerability to fuel price fluctuations.
Many homes off the gas grid already opt for insulation upgrades. This further increases heat pump performance and reduces the size of the system to be installed.
Heat pumps are also a great complement to solar panels and battery storage. This means that householders can use more self-generated electricity for heating and hot water.
Off-grid replacement works best when:
A heat-loss estimate has been calculated to ensure the system is adequate for Scottish winter conditions.
Aventus Eco can design a heat pump system that matches your property and energy use.
“Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.”

Upfront cost and performance impacts in the early decisions
Preliminary planning choices affect both initial investment and long-term comfort. So if you miss these checks, performance can be poor.
Key decisions include:
Boilers are often replaced without determining the existing heat loss, resulting in the installation of an oversized or undersized heating system. Both increase running costs.
An appropriate survey will spare unnecessary upgrades and focus only on what the home needs to perform effectively.
Aventus Eco provides full surveys, heat loss calculations, and clear recommendations so you can decide with confidence.

One of the biggest issues we face when replacing a boiler with a heat pump is the issue of radiators. The good news is that many homes in Scotland can retain most of their current radiators.
Boilers produce high-temperature heat. Heat pumps work differently. They emit slow, lower-temperature heat over longer periods. This requires radiators to give off enough heat without requiring extremely hot water.
If your radiators are already adequately sized, they may remain as they are. Failing that, you might have to replace some radiators with larger or double-panel models to keep rooms at a comfortable temperature.
Radiators are added based on the heat loss, not a guess. During thorough evaluations, each room is checked to determine how much heat it requires on the coldest days.
Radiators often work well when:
It is the smaller, older radiators in less-insulated rooms that are most likely to need replacing.
Aventus Eco assesses every room and only recommends upgrades where they are genuinely needed.
“Great experience from start to finish, excellent customer service and a job well done !”
Dee Kay, ★★★★★ Google Review
Not always. In many boiler swaps, it is just a matter of upgrading some radiators, not the whole system.
Kitchens, hallways, or large living spaces are often best suited to larger radiators. Bedrooms and small rooms are often left untouched.
Upgrading radiators improves efficiency. This enables the heat pump to operate at lower temperatures, decreasing electricity use and extending system life.
Radiator replacements are generally simple and are usually done at the same time as a typical installation.
Aventus Eco focuses on:
This method of heat delivery optimises comfort and saves money because there is no wasted heat on ceilings or upper stories.
A survey will confirm what’s required and what can stay.

To replace a combi with a heat pump, you do need a hot water cylinder. Heat pumps retain hot water, not heat it instantly.
Today’s cylinders have excellent insulation properties, retaining heat very well. They do not stay on 24/7; they are mostly just reheated a few times a day.
The size of the cylinder varies according to household demand. Larger families may require bigger cylinders to ensure adequate hot water for simultaneous use.
Typically, the cylinder is fitted to:
Aventus Eco sizes the system based on available space and the home’s daily hot water usage.
Aventus Eco helps plan layouts and choose the right cylinder without disrupting your home.

Yes. The boiler is entirely replaced with a heat pump. It’s an all-in-one solution that heats your space and provides hot water for your home.
Once the outfit is in place, all you have to do is remove the boiler. Gas or oil sets are uncoupled. Control of heating is switched from the heater to the heat pump.
Some houses may initially keep backup heat, but this is not necessary in the majority of Scottish homes.
The proper size also ensures your home stays comfortable even in the harshest winter months. Performance depends on:
Heat pumps are meant to accommodate more than just mild-weather heating needs.
A technical survey provides clear answers based on your home, not averages.

Boiler heat is fast and intense, whereas heat pumps provide steadier, more consistent warmth.
Rooms remain more evenly cooled. Cold spots are reduced. Temperature swings are less noticeable.
Heat pumps run longer, so homes feel warmer all day rather than just short-term blasts.

The cost of replacing a boiler with a heat pump in Scotland will vary depending on your home, heating requirements and existing system.
Most Scottish boiler replacement projects fall within clear ranges:
Swapping a gas boiler for a heat pump: £8,000-£13,000 before grants
Changing a heating system from oil to a heat pump: £7,500-£12,000 pre-grants
Oil boiler replacement is generally more affordable, though off-grid homes typically face higher overall heating costs.
Cost is driven by:
Surveys matter. Online quotes do not take into account the level of insulation and layout of your home, or the output of your radiators. Diligent survey work prevents over-sizing and preserves efficiency.
You can receive a proper survey with everything you need to know.

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.+0Posted on Google![]()

We wanted to retrofit our home to improve energy efficiency, change to an air source heat pump (ASHP) and add solar panels and a battery. Aventus Eco was recommended by a Retrofit Consultancy. Sean clearly explained and planned out the processes for our ASHP. We really felt that he was interested to make it work well for us. Installation was smooth. The team was well coordinated and communicated well during the process. They completed the work to a very high standard and minimised any disruption to our home. We were so impressed with the ASHP fitting that we quickly followed this up with Aventus Eco planning and installing our solar panels and battery. We would highly recommend Sean and the Aventus Eco team.Posted on Google![]()

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.Posted on Google![]()

Sean and the team at Aventus Eco did a fantastic job installing our air source heat pump. They were really friendly, proactive and efficient throughout the whole process. After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. The installation itself was carried out with real care and professionalism. The team put everything back in place afterwards and left the house as though they had never been there. Since the instal, the house now constantly feels like it is at a comfortable temperature, and the amount of energy we use on a daily basis compared to our old electric boiler has been reduced. Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.+2Posted on Google![]()
