Christine’s Gartcosh home, one of our solar panel installs around Glasgow, was running £600 a month on electricity, even with an air source heat pump already fitted. Another company had installed it and never commissioned it properly. The fix took three things:
• 10.5 kWp black bifacial solar array, sized to her actual usage.
• 20.8 kWh of battery storage, to carry daytime generation into the evening.
• Full re-commissioning of the heat pump, with correct flow temperature and weather compensation.

Yes. Solar panels run on daylight, not direct sunshine, and Scotland gets enough. A typical 4kW system in Central Scotland produces 3,200 to 3,800 kWh a year, with most output between March and September. Cloudy days cut output by 50 to 75% but generation doesn’t stop, and cold clear days lift panel efficiency because heat reduces output.
Flats are usually impractical due to shared roofs and planning consent issues, particularly in Edinburgh and Glasgow tenement properties. Small roofs work, even a two or three panel system can offset £200 to £400 per year if your usage matches generation. We’ll tell you honestly during the survey if your roof isn’t worth it.
A typical 4kW solar PV system costs £8,000 to £10,500 installed. Add a 5 to 10 kWh battery and pricing moves to £11,000 to £17,000. Yes, the saving depends on your tariff, how much electricity you use during the day, and whether you have battery storage. Without battery, expect a 30 to 50% bill reduction; with battery and a smart export tariff, 70%+ is common. Christine in Gartcosh went further, with her heat pump re-commissioned too. Payback on a cash-bought system typically runs 8 to 12 years.
The Home Energy Scotland interest-free solar loan closed in June 2024, and ECO4 closes for good on 31 December 2026. Solar in Scotland is now self-funded for most homeowners. The main universal saving available is 0% VAT on solar installations, in effect until March 2027. We’ll tell you honestly if any current scheme applies to your property rather than implying grants exist where they don’t.
Yes, via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Standard fixed export tariffs pay around 4 to 12p per kWh; Outgoing Octopus pays 12p, down from 15p in March 2026. Smart time-of-use tariffs like Octopus Flux pay more at peak hours (4pm to 7pm), where battery storage earns its keep. Tariff choice matters more than system size, and we cover it during your survey.
No. Roof hooks sit beneath the tiles or slates without piercing the waterproof membrane, and every fixing is flashed and sealed to spec, covered by our 5-year workmanship warranty. Slate, concrete tile, and metal roofs all work, including older Scottish slate after an integrity check. Black-on-black panels and in-roof mounting suit period and conservation properties, and we handle any planning applications needed.
Most domestic solar installs are completed in 1 to 3 days, depending on system size and roof complexity. We coordinate scaffolding, electrical work, and panel installation across consecutive days where possible. Solar is normally permitted development, with conservation areas and listed buildings the exceptions.
