Home / Blog / Ground mounted solar panels in Scotland
Ground mounted solar panels sit on a steel or aluminium frame fixed into your garden or paddock instead of on the roof. In Scotland they suit one kind of property above all: a house whose roof is a poor spot for solar, with open, sunny ground beside it. You choose the direction and the angle, which a roof never lets you do, and in exchange you take on a frame, foundations, a cable trench back to the house and, on some plots, a planning application.

The question tends to come up away from the cities. A stone farmhouse with an oil tank in the yard, a cottage whose only south-facing slope is an old slate roof, a croft with far more land than roof: those are the properties where a frame in the field starts to look better than ladders and scaffolding.
A north-facing roof is the clearest case. Panels on it produce a little over half of what the same panels manage facing south, and moving them to open ground gives you the full due-south figure. Shade does the same damage on a roof of any direction: a row of mature trees, a taller neighbour or a farm building to the south can cut the hours of direct sun a roof gets, while a spot in the garden or field may sit clear of all of them.
Some roofs face the right way and still make poor hosts. A natural slate roof near the end of its life needs reslating before anyone fixes panels to it, and some roofs can’t take the extra weight or have too little clear area between valleys, dormers and chimneys. A listed farmhouse is a different story, because the planning rules treat its garden much like its roof (the planning section below covers that).
Rural plots bring the space. A ground array can run as wide as you need, so a household that wants more panels than a small roof holds can fit them on one frame instead of splitting them across awkward roof faces.
Off-gas farmhouses add a second reason when a heat pump is part of the plan. Replace an oil boiler with an air source heat pump and the house’s electricity use climbs, with the bulk of the extra in the colder half of the year. Home Energy Scotland’s grant for the heat pump runs up to £7,500, rising to £9,000 in remote rural, island and off-gas accessible rural areas, with an optional £7,500 interest-free loan beside it. The solar side gets no Home Energy Scotland money; its savings come from 0% VAT and Smart Export Guarantee payments for the power you send to the grid. Our heat pump and solar package for Scottish homes page shows how we pair solar panels with a heat pump.
Be clear about timing before you size an array around a heat pump. Panels in Scotland produce little in December and January, the months a heat pump works hardest, so a ground array trims the spring, summer and autumn bills far more than the winter ones.
“We initially had Sean over to provide a quote, and as we didn’t know much about heat pumps, he explained everything clearly and in a way we could easily understand. He emphasized the importance of proper heat loss calculations for our property, which helped us determine which existing radiators we could keep.”

The panels on a ground frame are the same models that go on roofs, so the frame doesn’t make a panel more efficient. The gain comes from position: you set the direction and the tilt, and you leave open air behind the panels.
We ran the European Commission’s PVGIS model for Glasgow on 13 October 2026 to put numbers on that. It puts the best fixed angle at 41 degrees facing due south, and the same run for Edinburgh gives 42 degrees. The table compares that optimum with typical roof positions, per kilowatt-peak of panels.
| Panel position (Glasgow) | Yearly output per kWp | Share of the best position |
|---|---|---|
| Due south, 41 degrees (PVGIS optimum) | 861 kWh | 100% |
| Due south, 35 degrees | 859 kWh | 99.7% |
| Due south, 15 degrees | 802 kWh | 93% |
| West, 35 degrees | 687 kWh | 80% |
| East, 35 degrees | 679 kWh | 79% |
| North, 35 degrees | 473 kWh | 55% |
PVGIS 5.3 (European Commission Joint Research Centre), SARAH3 solar radiation data, 1 kWp, 14% system losses, queried 13 October 2026. Edinburgh at its 42 degree optimum: 909 kWh per kWp.
A south roof at an ordinary pitch lands within a fraction of a percent of the ideal, so a ground frame adds next to nothing there. Against an east or west roof the frame gains about a quarter more per panel. Against a north roof it gains 82%.
Open air behind the panels helps a little too. Panels lose some output as they heat up, and a ground frame keeps them cooler than panels fixed close to the slates. On a Scottish summer day the effect is small next to direction and tilt.
Siting matters more this far north than the table suggests. At noon on the shortest day the sun stands about 11 degrees above the horizon in Glasgow, so a 2 metre hedge throws a shadow more than 10 metres long. Leave that winter shadow clear in front of the array, and leave the same kind of gap between rows if you build more than one.
If you’re weighing a ground frame against your own roof, our guide to the best roof direction for solar panels in Scotland sets out what each roof face gives up.
Scotland runs its own permitted development order, and the limits you’ll find on UK-wide sites (an array of 9 square metres, set 5 metres from the boundary) come from the English rules. Free-standing solar beside a house in Scotland falls under Class 3B of The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Scotland) Order 1992, in the form the 2011 amendment gave it and as amended again from 24 May 2024. The Scottish Government’s Planning Circular 1/2024 names free-standing solar panels as one of the things Class 3B covers.
Under Class 3B you can put up a ground array within the curtilage of your house without a planning application, unless:
We checked that wording on legislation.gov.uk and the circular on gov.scot on 13 October 2026. The 2024 amendment added Class 6HA for solar on any part of the house and Class 6HB for solar on outbuildings, and left these four limits as they were.
Curtilage means the ground that goes with the house, which on a farm or croft is a smaller area than the land you own. A field beyond the garden sits outside it, so Class 3B doesn’t reach an array placed there. Ask your council’s planning team about a field site before you plan around it.
The 3 metre cap shapes the frame. Stack the panels three high at a steep Scottish tilt and the top edge can pass 3 metres, so a permitted development layout tends to run long and low, two panels high.
In a conservation area or the grounds of a listed building you need planning permission, and listed building consent can apply on top. Our guide to solar panels for period and listed homes in Scotland covers how those applications tend to go.
“Sean is a brilliant guy who really is diligent to give you the best service. Not only that, I know if we had any questions in the future he would be here to help us out in a heartbeat.”

A ground mount starts with a fixed-tilt frame in galvanised steel or aluminium, with rails across it that the panels clamp to. Three kinds of foundation hold it down, and your ground decides between them.
Every foundation has to hold the frame against the wind and snow loads for that exact spot. A frame on an exposed hillside in Argyll or on the Ayrshire coast takes far more wind than one in a sheltered Lothian garden, and structural calculations to the Eurocodes (BS EN 1991-1-3 for snow, BS EN 1991-1-4 for wind) set the leg spacing, bracing and foundation depth.
On a working farm, plan a fence round the array. Sheep and cattle rub against frame legs and exposed cable, and a stock fence costs far less than a bent frame.
The power from a ground array reaches the house through armoured cable laid in a trench, with warning tape buried above it. Route the trench around drains, the septic tank, the oil line and anywhere you might dig later. A longer run needs a thicker cable to keep voltage losses down, so every extra metre between array and house adds to both the digging and the cable.
The inverter can live in the house or in a weatherproof housing beside the array. That choice decides whether the buried cable carries the panels’ DC output or the inverter’s AC output, and an installer settles it on cable length and access.
Ground mount solar in the UK follows the same grid rules everywhere, and every grid-connected array has to be registered with the local distribution network operator (DNO). In central and southern Scotland that is SP Energy Networks; in the north it is Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN). Two Energy Networks Association standards set the process:
| Standard | Covers | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| G98 | Inverters rated up to 16A per phase: 3.68 kW on a single-phase supply, about 11 kW on three-phase | The installer connects the system, then notifies the DNO within 28 days of commissioning |
| G99 | Inverters rated above 16A per phase | The installer applies first, and the DNO must approve before the system connects |
Rural houses run on single-phase supplies in large numbers, and a ground array sized for a heat pump household can need an inverter rated above 3.68 kW. That moves it into G99 and adds the DNO’s approval to your timeline. On a long rural line the DNO can also cap how much the array exports, which changes how much of the output you use at home against how much you sell.
The Eco Experts, in a guide updated on 6 February 2026, puts a ground mounted system for a typical home at £8,000 to £15,000, and it cites Solartherm UK for a premium of 25% to 35% over a roof install. These are UK market ranges, not Scottish quotes.
The premium comes from the structure your roof gives you for free:
Set those costs against the output table and the case sorts itself by roof.
Against a north roof, 82% more output a year can cover that premium.
Against an east or west roof, the gain of about a quarter sits inside the 25% to 35% premium, so the frame needs another reason, such as shade, a failing roof or the size you want.
Against a good south roof, the roof wins on cost.
Two savings apply to either route. HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6 zero-rates solar panels “installed in, or on the site of, a building” until 31 March 2027, with 5% from 1 April 2027, and a ground array beside your house sits on the site of it; check the VAT line on any quote all the same. The Smart Export Guarantee pays for the units you export. For roof-mounted prices, our 2026 guide to solar panel costs in Scotland lays out the figures.
“Outstanding service, difficult decision to make to change to air source heat pump especially give the level of misinformation. Sean/Aventus Eco were outstanding in helping me explore and decide that this was right solution.”

Snow slides off panels at a steep tilt faster than off flat ones, and a 41 degree frame sheds it well. Give the bottom edge enough clearance above the ground that snow sliding off, and summer grass, can’t bank up against the lowest row. A covered strip along the bottom edge can drag down a whole string of panels. You can also clear a ground array with a soft brush from where you stand, which nobody should try on a roof.
Wind loads are settled at the design stage, but walk round the frame after a big storm and check the clamps and fixings. A ground array also sits within reach of the strimmer: keep grass and weeds down in front of the bottom row, and keep the strimmer line away from the cable where it leaves the frame. Scottish rain washes the panels for you, though bird droppings on the top row can outlast it.
Once a year, look at the frame, the cable entry into the house and the inverter’s readings against the same month last year. On the roof systems we fit, a 5-year workmanship guarantee applies, and our solar PV installation service across Scotland page sets out the aftercare that goes with it.
A ground array makes sense on some Scottish properties and wastes money on others, and the difference comes down to measurements: the direction and condition of your roof, the shade across your garden or field, the distance back to the house and your supply. A survey tells you whether your roof or your ground is the better spot, with the yearly output each would give.
In many gardens you don’t. Class 3B of Scotland’s permitted development order allows free-standing solar within the curtilage of a house up to 3 metres high, behind the front of the house, provided the array plus existing sheds, garages and extensions covers no more than half the front or rear garden ground. Conservation areas, the grounds of listed buildings and fields beyond the garden need permission.
The panels are the same, but a ground frame can face due south at the best angle. In PVGIS figures for Glasgow, that produces 27% more a year than an east-facing roof and 82% more than a north-facing one, and almost nothing extra over a south roof.
The Eco Experts (February 2026) puts a ground mounted system for a typical home at £8,000 to £15,000 and cites a 25% to 35% premium over a roof install. The frame, foundations, trench length and ground conditions decide where a quote lands.
Due south at about 41 degrees in Glasgow and 42 degrees in Edinburgh, according to PVGIS. A frame a few degrees either side loses very little, so a lower frame that stays under the 3 metre planning height can make sense.
Yes. For an inverter rated up to 16A per phase (3.68 kW single-phase) your installer notifies SP Energy Networks or SSEN within 28 days of commissioning under G98. Above that, G99 applies and the DNO must approve the connection first.
They can supply part of its electricity, more in spring and autumn than in December and January, when Scottish panels produce little. The heat pump can still get a Home Energy Scotland grant of up to £7,500, or £9,000 in eligible rural areas; the solar side gets no HES funding.

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.+0Posted on Google![]()

We wanted to retrofit our home to improve energy efficiency, change to an air source heat pump (ASHP) and add solar panels and a battery. Aventus Eco was recommended by a Retrofit Consultancy. Sean clearly explained and planned out the processes for our ASHP. We really felt that he was interested to make it work well for us. Installation was smooth. The team was well coordinated and communicated well during the process. They completed the work to a very high standard and minimised any disruption to our home. We were so impressed with the ASHP fitting that we quickly followed this up with Aventus Eco planning and installing our solar panels and battery. We would highly recommend Sean and the Aventus Eco team.Posted on Google![]()

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.Posted on Google![]()

Sean and the team at Aventus Eco did a fantastic job installing our air source heat pump. They were really friendly, proactive and efficient throughout the whole process. After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits. The installation itself was carried out with real care and professionalism. The team put everything back in place afterwards and left the house as though they had never been there. Since the instal, the house now constantly feels like it is at a comfortable temperature, and the amount of energy we use on a daily basis compared to our old electric boiler has been reduced. We are looking forward to seeing how this continues in the colder months. We would happily recommend Aventus Eco and Sean to anyone considering an air source heat pump.Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Service from Aventus Eco Ltd – Highly Recommended! I had been struggling with unusually high electricity consumption—around 50 kWh per day—due to my air source heat pump system. Despite reaching out to multiple companies, including the original installer, no one was willing to help or even respond. That’s when I contacted Sean from Aventus Eco Ltd, and I’m so glad I did. Sean promptly visited my home, conducted a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors, and successfully identified the root cause of the issue. He didn’t stop there—he also provided a detailed report that I could share with the installer and even offered to assist further in resolving the problem. Sean’s professionalism, technical expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile truly set him apart. He is an absolute superstar, and I can’t recommend Aventus Eco Ltd highly enough for anyone facing similar challenges.Posted on Google![]()

Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.+2Posted on Google![]()
