Yes, in most cases you can add a battery to solar panels you already have. Nobody needs to strip panels off the roof or start again from scratch. What decides how the retrofit works, and what it costs, isn’t the panels at all. It’s the inverter sitting in your garage, loft or hall cupboard right now, because that’s the box every battery has to talk to.
That’s the whole article in one sentence: check the inverter, then work out the route. The short answer is yes, and it’s the most common question we get from people who put panels up years ago and are only now looking at storage. Adding battery storage to an existing solar system comes down to one thing: what inverter is already sitting on your wall. That’s the single fact that decides how simple or involved the job turns out to be.
If you’re asking how to add battery storage to a solar system that’s already installed, there are two broad routes. One connects the battery on the DC side, before your existing inverter ever sees the power. The other connects on the AC side, after your inverter’s already done its job, wired in separately at your consumer unit.
Add battery to existing solar and neither route touches the panels, the roof mounting, or the array wiring. That part stays exactly as it is.
These are the two routes, and picking the right one is the whole decision.

EcoFlow doesn’t publish a list of inverters that work with the PowerOcean DC Fit.
It publishes the opposite: a list of what’s excluded. If your inverter isn’t on it, it qualifies.
That second list matters because it’s narrow. Solax hybrid inverter battery compatibility is a common search because SolaX makes several ranges, and only the X3 series sits on the exclusion list; most other SolaX hybrid inverters aren’t affected.
The same goes for Solis inverter battery compatibility and Fox ESS battery compatibility: neither brand appears on EcoFlow’s exclusion list at all, so most Solis and Fox ESS hybrids qualify for DC coupling as things stand. That’s not a guarantee for every model number ever made, which is why home solar battery inverter compatibility gets checked properly rather than assumed from the brand name alone. Get your exact inverter model checked against the current list rather than guessing from what’s written on the box.

Sometimes the answer isn’t DC-coupled or AC-coupled. It’s replace the inverter and fit a hybrid inverter with battery management built in from the start.
A hybrid solar inverter with battery combines two jobs in one box. It still converts your panels’ DC output into AC for the property, and it manages charging and discharging the battery too, through a single unit rather than two separate ones. That’s the real answer to what is a battery inverter, in plain terms: it’s the inverter built to handle a battery as part of its core job, not bolted on afterwards.
This route earns its keep in one specific situation: your existing inverter is near the end of its working life. Most string inverters last around 10 to 12 years before efficiency drops or the unit starts throwing faults.
If yours is already there, or close to it, replacing it with a hybrid unit that handles the battery natively can work out cheaper over time than retrofitting a DC or AC kit onto an inverter you’ll be swapping out in a couple of years.
If your inverter’s got years of healthy life left, a full swap is rarely the better call. Retrofitting around it almost always is.
There’s no single number here, and anyone quoting one without seeing your setup is guessing.
The cost to add a battery to a solar system depends on
We give you an exact figure after a survey, not before.
What we can say with certainty is the two things currently shaping solar panel battery storage cost in the UK right now. First, 0% VAT applies to battery and solar installs until 31 March 2027, which takes a meaningful chunk off whatever the final number turns out to be. Second, the Smart Export Guarantee pays 4 to 12p per kWh for whatever you export, against the 24 to 30p or more you’re paying per kWh to buy electricity back at peak times.
A battery closes that gap: instead of selling cheap at 1pm and buying dear at 6pm, you use your own stored power. That spread, not any grant, is what makes a retrofit battery pay for itself.
Worth being straight about grants too, because it’s the question we get asked most: Home Energy Scotland doesn’t fund solar PV or battery storage at all right now. That support is reserved for heat pumps, up to £7,500, or £9,000 in remote rural areas. A big share of the retrofit work we do is on arrays that went up during the 2010-2019 Feed-in Tariff years, before batteries were common and long before EcoFlow existed as a brand. Stone cottages, harled semis, rural properties that switched off oil or LPG heating years ago and never got round to storage. Those systems are usually straightforward DC Fit candidates, because the inverters from that era tend to be the string type EcoFlow’s exclusion list doesn’t touch.
