Home / Blog / Solar battery storage cost in Scotland
The solar battery storage cost in Scotland runs from under £2,000 to around £10,000 fitted, going by the range Which? published on 15 May 2026, and two quotes for the same size of battery can sit thousands of pounds apart.
You also pay the full amount yourself. Home Energy Scotland’s loan for solar PV and batteries has closed to new applicants, so there is no grant or interest-free loan to take the edge off the price.

Scotland changes the sums in two places. Your panels produce little from November to January, so a battery here earns its winter keep by charging from cheap overnight or midday grid hours rather than from the roof.
And a home with a heat pump draws more power on winter evenings, which pushes the useful battery size up. The figures below come from named sources with dates, so you can check them against any quote you hold.
We checked five neutral sources for battery prices on 25 September 2026, and none of them sells or fits batteries.
The spread comes from what sits inside the price. A fitted battery covers
Some houses need more: a consumer unit upgrade, a longer cable run from a garage or loft, or a backup circuit that keeps chosen sockets live in a power cut. A cheap headline figure with none of that included will not match a quote for a finished, working system.
Aventus fits Fox ESS and EcoFlow batteries, and we are an authorised EcoFlow installer. We do not publish a price list, because the battery size and set-up come out of the survey. You can see the systems themselves on our solar battery storage installation page.
Capacity drives the cost more than anything else. Which? puts new lithium-ion home batteries in a 5 to 15 kWh band, and the published prices climb with it.
| Battery | Fitted price | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| 5 kWh | £4,000 to £5,000 | The Eco Experts, 25 Feb 2026 |
| 5 kWh | About £4,600 | Energy Saving Trust, via MoneySavingExpert, 4 Aug 2026 |
| 10 kWh | £8,500 to £10,000 | The Eco Experts, 25 Feb 2026 |
| 16 kWh | £12,000 to £16,000 | The Eco Experts, 25 Feb 2026 |
None of the five sources publishes a 15 kWh row, so the 16 kWh figure is the nearest published marker for that size.
Price per kWh drops as the battery grows. The Eco Experts puts it at around £1,000 per kWh up to 5 kWh, then a little less for each kWh after that. The inverter, the labour and the commissioning cost about the same whether you fit 5 kWh or 15 kWh, so a bigger battery spreads those fixed costs thinner.
That makes the biggest battery look like the best value, and it is the wrong way to buy one. A battery only saves money on the units it fills and empties.
If your house uses 6 kWh between teatime and breakfast, a 15 kWh battery leaves 9 kWh of paid-for storage sitting idle most nights. Size it to your evening and overnight use, then add headroom for a heat pump or an electric car if one is coming.
In Gartcosh, Christine’s family were paying electricity bills averaging around £600 in some months, and the air source heat pump already in the house had never been set up correctly. We fitted a 10.5 kWp solar array with 20.8 kWh of battery storage and optimised the heat pump’s flow temperatures, balancing and controls.
The monthly bill dropped to £24.79. The battery is only part of that result, since the heat pump fix and the solar array did a share of the work, but it shows the size a heat pump household can justify.
“We are also grateful for his knowledge and input into adjusting our heat pump and currently our bills are massively reduced.” Christine C, Gartcosh, ★★★★★ Google Review
“They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage.”
Duncan Livingstone, ★★★★★ Google Review
The cheapest time to buy a battery is at the same visit as the panels.
Which? gives an example from one energy supplier’s price list: batteries from £2,910 on their own, or from £1,680 bought with solar panels (Which?, 15 May 2026). Other suppliers set other prices, but the direction holds.
If you are pricing panels and a battery together around the capital, our solar panel installation in Edinburgh page shows how we design the two as one system.
A retrofit starts from the equipment already on your wall. Older arrays run through a string inverter that has no battery connection, so the battery arrives with its own inverter, or the old inverter comes off and a hybrid goes in. Both routes add hardware and labour that a new install does not carry. MoneySavingExpert makes the same point: a battery added to existing panels needs an additional inverter.
Adding storage later still makes sense for plenty of Scottish homes, and a young array with years of generation ahead is a good candidate. Our page on adding a battery to existing solar panels covers how we approach it.
The two terms describe where the battery joins your system, and the choice moves the price.
A DC-coupled battery shares a hybrid inverter with the panels. Solar power charges the battery as direct current before any conversion, and the one inverter turns it into household AC when you need it. You buy one inverter, and less energy goes missing along the way. This is the usual set-up for a new solar and battery install.
An AC-coupled battery has its own inverter and connects on the house side of your existing solar inverter. It works alongside almost any array, which is why retrofits tend to use it. The trade-off is a second inverter to pay for and a power path that converts DC to AC and back again, losing a little energy each time. Which?, citing the Energy Saving Trust, notes that AC systems cost more than DC systems.
| DC-coupled | AC-coupled | |
|---|---|---|
| Inverters | One hybrid inverter for panels and battery | Separate battery inverter alongside the solar one |
| Typical use | New solar and battery together | Adding a battery to existing panels |
| Relative cost | Lower | Higher, per Which? and the Energy Saving Trust |
| Conversion losses | Fewer conversions | More conversions |
On a retrofit the choice depends on your existing inverter, its age and the space on the wall, and the survey settles it.
“Aventus Eco upgraded our battery storage quickly and really easily, and fixed problems our original installer had left. Nothing but praise for the company.”
Colin Moss, ★★★★★ Google Review
A battery earns its money on the gap between the price you charge it at and the price of the power it replaces. Three Octopus time-of-use tariffs suit battery owners in Scotland, each with its own entry rules. The rates below are Octopus’s published unit rates for 14 October 2026 for the South Scotland region, with North Scotland in brackets. Domestic electricity carries 0% VAT from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, so these are the prices you pay.
Flux also pays for export at the peak: 27.2p a unit between 16:00 and 19:00 in South Scotland on the same date, so a full battery can sell back at the most valuable hour.
On Cosy Octopus in South Scotland, each unit you buy at 12.2p and use in the 4pm to 7pm peak, instead of paying 37.3p, saves 25.1p. A unit used in the standard 24.8p hours saves 12.6p.
A battery that moves 8 kWh a day, half into the peak and half into standard hours, saves about £1.51 a day, or close to £550 over a year before charging losses. Your own figure depends on your usage pattern, your region and the rate on the day you sign up, and Octopus revises these rates through the year.
Set that daily saving against the published prices above and you have the start of a payback sum. Our guide to whether battery storage pays off in Scotland runs through that side of the decision.
“Aventus Eco installed solar panels and a battery and all went like clockwork. Now running virtually all day on a few £ of off peak electricity (Octopus) and the rest is solar feeding into the battery.”
Paul Prior, ★★★★★ Google Review
Home Energy Scotland says batteries tend to last 10 to 15 years. MoneySavingExpert gives a wider band of 5 to 20 years, and Which? notes that 10-year warranties are common. Panels last 25 years or more, so plan on replacing the battery at least once over the life of the array. EcoFlow’s PowerOcean carries a 15-year manufacturer warranty, five years beyond the 10-year term Which? calls common.
Lifespan turns a battery’s price into a cost per unit stored. The Eco Experts puts a lithium-ion home battery at around 4,000 charge cycles. Spread the Energy Saving Trust’s £4,600 figure for a 5 kWh battery across 4,000 full cycles and each unit you store costs about 23p in hardware, before charging losses.
Put that 23p next to the tariff gaps above. A battery that fills and empties each day against a 25p peak-rate gap pays its way; one that half-fills on a 13p gap struggles. That is the case for sizing to the use you already have, and for reading the small print on the warranty: many guarantee a share of the original capacity at the end of the term, alongside the years.
You pay no VAT on a home battery installation until 31 March 2027. Section 2.19 of HMRC’s VAT Notice 708/6 sets out the rule: from 1 February 2024 the zero rate reached batteries added to older arrays and grid-only batteries with no panels at all, and a battery fitted with new solar already qualified as part of that install.
From 1 April 2027 the notice puts the rate at 5%, about £400 on a battery at Home Energy Scotland’s £8,000 figure.
Solar panels carry the same zero rate to the same date, and our 2026 solar panel cost guide covers the panel side of the bill.
Home Energy Scotland puts no grant money into solar PV or batteries, and new applicants can no longer get its interest-free loan for them. Heat pumps are different: Home Energy Scotland still funds them, so a heat pump and a battery bought together sit under two separate sets of rules.
The ranges above tell you what the market charges. The number that matters for you comes from how much power your house uses after dark, which tariff you can join, and whether your panels are new or already on the roof. Our survey measures those and turns them into a battery size and a written quote.
The Eco Experts puts a fitted 10 kWh battery at £8,500 to £10,000 (February 2026), and Home Energy Scotland lists £8,000 as a typical battery cost. Prices in Scotland follow the UK market, with 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
A standalone battery charged from the grid qualifies for 0% VAT, and it saves money on the gap between off-peak and peak rates. In Scotland, Cosy Octopus has a 25.1p gap in South Scotland (October 2026), but Octopus Flux needs solar panels, so the tariff you can join decides the value.
No. Home Energy Scotland offers no grant for batteries or solar PV, and its loan for them has closed to new applicants. Every Scottish homeowner still pays 0% VAT on a battery installation until 31 March 2027, under HMRC’s zero rate.
Home Energy Scotland puts the life of a home battery at 10 to 15 years. Warranties of around 10 years are common, and EcoFlow’s PowerOcean carries a 15-year manufacturer warranty.
In most cases, yes. A retrofit needs a separate battery inverter or a replacement hybrid inverter, and Which? notes that AC-coupled systems cost more than DC-coupled ones.
Quotes differ on capacity, the inverter, and the electrical work your house needs, such as a consumer unit upgrade or a backup circuit. Compare quotes on usable kWh and on what the price includes.
Tell us your usage and tariff. We'll size a battery and give you a written price for your own house.

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.+0Posted on Google![]()

We wanted to retrofit our home to improve energy efficiency, change to an air source heat pump (ASHP) and add solar panels and a battery. Aventus Eco was recommended by a Retrofit Consultancy. Sean clearly explained and planned out the processes for our ASHP. We really felt that he was interested to make it work well for us. Installation was smooth. The team was well coordinated and communicated well during the process. They completed the work to a very high standard and minimised any disruption to our home. We were so impressed with the ASHP fitting that we quickly followed this up with Aventus Eco planning and installing our solar panels and battery. We would highly recommend Sean and the Aventus Eco team.Posted on Google![]()

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.Posted on Google![]()

Our household was going through the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan scheme as we qualified for a heat pump. Sean came recommended by an insulation company and I’m glad that I reached out. Despite being very busy, Sean was keen to get a solution for us, his knowledge and work ethic came across immediately so we were happy to have Aventus take on the work. Meeting, survey, work scheduled, and completed to a very high standard. We’re very happy with our heat pump system as well as the ongoing support from Sean.Posted on Google![]()

Sean and the team at Aventus Eco did a fantastic job installing our air source heat pump. They were really friendly, proactive and efficient throughout the whole process. After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits. The installation itself was carried out with real care and professionalism. The team put everything back in place afterwards and left the house as though they had never been there. Since the instal, the house now constantly feels like it is at a comfortable temperature, and the amount of energy we use on a daily basis compared to our old electric boiler has been reduced. We are looking forward to seeing how this continues in the colder months. We would happily recommend Aventus Eco and Sean to anyone considering an air source heat pump.Posted on Google![]()

Outstanding Service from Aventus Eco Ltd – Highly Recommended! I had been struggling with unusually high electricity consumption—around 50 kWh per day—due to my air source heat pump system. Despite reaching out to multiple companies, including the original installer, no one was willing to help or even respond. That’s when I contacted Sean from Aventus Eco Ltd, and I’m so glad I did. Sean promptly visited my home, conducted a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors, and successfully identified the root cause of the issue. He didn’t stop there—he also provided a detailed report that I could share with the installer and even offered to assist further in resolving the problem. Sean’s professionalism, technical expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile truly set him apart. He is an absolute superstar, and I can’t recommend Aventus Eco Ltd highly enough for anyone facing similar challenges.Posted on Google![]()

Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.+2Posted on Google![]()

We initially had Sean over to provide a quote, and as we didn’t know much about heat pumps, he explained everything clearly and in a way we could easily understand. He emphasized the importance of proper heat loss calculations for our property, which helped us determine which existing radiators we could keep. Sean also walked us through how the system would operate once installed and shared tips on how to get the best efficiency from it. When the team came to install the system, the entire process was incredibly streamlined and completed in just three days. The guys made sure to cover all our carpets and left the place spotless. I can honestly say Sean and his team were fantastic—our heat pump is now up and running, and even on the coldest days, our energy usage is nearly half compared to gas. Although we’ve needed to tweak a few settings, Sean took the time to show us exactly how to adjust everything. I would highly recommend him and his team to anyone.
