If you have searched for a solar panel grant in Scotland, you have probably found a lot of pages hinting at free money and very few giving you a straight answer.

If you have searched for a solar panel grant in Scotland, you have probably found a lot of pages hinting at free money and very few giving you a straight answer. Here is the straight answer. There is no grant for standard solar panels in Scotland for most homeowners, and the Home Energy Scotland funding that used to help closed in 2024. That sounds like bad news, but it is not the whole story. There is real support that brings the cost down, and for most Scottish homes solar still pays for itself. This guide sets out exactly what exists in 2026, who qualifies, and what to do if you do not.
The reason this matters is simple. If you assume a grant exists, you become an easy target for a cold-caller promising “free solar panels” you do not qualify for, or for an installer who pads the price to “absorb” a grant that was never coming. Knowing the real picture is what lets you judge a quote properly.
For standard rooftop solar PV, no. There is no Scottish Government grant that pays for ordinary solar panels for the general homeowner, and there has not been since 2024. Scotland has fewer solar incentives than England or Wales, where schemes like the Warm Homes: Local Grant or Green Homes Wales exist. None of those apply north of the border.
What Scotland does have is a small number of targeted routes, none of which fund standard solar for most people. The two worth understanding are Home Energy Scotland and ECO4, covered below, plus the 0% VAT rate and export payments that benefit everyone.
Anyone telling you there is a straightforward solar panel grant for your home in 2026 is working from out-of-date information.
The Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan is the Scottish Government’s main home energy programme, and it is generous, but not for solar. Energy Saving Trust Scotland stopped funding standard solar PV and battery storage projects through the scheme in 2024.
The only solar technology it still supports is solar thermal and hybrid solar PV-T, the panels that generate both electricity and hot water, for an interest-free loan of up to £5,000.
Standard solar PV, the kind most people want, is not eligible at all.
Where Home Energy Scotland is worth knowing about is heating. Heat pumps still attract a £7,500 grant plus an optional £7,500 interest-free loan, with a £1,500 grant uplift for rural and island homes. For solar alone, though, Home Energy Scotland is not a funding route. ECO4 is the one route that can genuinely fund solar panels in full, and it is the source of most “free solar” advertising. The catch is who qualifies. ECO4 is a UK-wide scheme funded by the large energy suppliers, and it is aimed squarely at low-income and vulnerable households, not the general homeowner.

Solar is rarely funded on its own. It comes as part of a whole-house package alongside insulation and heating, where it fits the wider plan for the property. Local Authority Flex can widen the criteria in some council areas, so it is worth checking, but the reality is that fewer than one in ten ECO4 measures have been solar.
ECO4 also closes to new applicants on 31 December 2026, with no replacement confirmed, so the window is closing. If a salesperson promises free solar without asking a single question about your income, benefits or EPC, be very cautious.

Two more schemes come up in searches. Warmer Homes Scotland is the Scottish Government’s fuel-poverty programme, offering free energy improvements to low-income and vulnerable households, those on a qualifying benefit, aged 75 or over, or with a cold-sensitive health condition. Solar can sometimes form part of a package, but like ECO4 it is targeted, not general.
The Warm Homes Plan is the one to watch but not to wait for.
The UK government announced this £15bn scheme in January 2026, with grants and low-interest loans promised when it launches.
As of mid-2026 there is still no confirmed start date, and crucially no clarity on what it means for Scotland, where £1.5bn is set aside for the devolved nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to allocate.
It may eventually bring new solar support, but any such support is not expected before 2027, and Scotland runs its own schemes through Home Energy Scotland in any case. Holding off a sensible installation today on the chance of an unconfirmed scheme tomorrow rarely makes financial sense, especially with the 0% VAT window closing in 2027.

If you do not qualify for ECO4 or Warmer Homes Scotland, which is the case for the large majority of Scottish homeowners, two supports still apply to you and make a real difference.
The first is 0% VAT. Solar panels and battery storage carry a zero VAT rate until 31 March 2027 across Scotland, England and Wales. Your installer applies it automatically, with no form to fill in, and it takes a meaningful chunk off the total. The second is the Smart Export Guarantee. Once your system is installed and you have a smart meter, your supplier pays you for the surplus electricity you export to the grid. Rates vary by tariff, with the better ones such as Outgoing Octopus paying around 12p per kWh.
