How to Choose a Heat Pump Installer in Scotland: What to Check Before You Sign

Knowing how to choose a heat pump installer in Scotland comes down to a handful of checks you can make before you sign anything: an MCS number you can look up, a survey that measures every room, a design flow temperature written on the quote, and a workmanship guarantee that still pays out if the company stops trading. The installer you pick decides how warm the house feels in January and what you pay to keep it there, more than the brand on the outdoor unit does.

Key takeaways

Price still matters, and the cheaper of two quotes can carry the better design. Put the designs side by side first and read the totals after.

How to Choose a Heat Pump Installer: Check MCS Certification First

An anthracite Vaillant heat pump on feet in front of a sandstone base course, and a dark grey Panasonic heat pump beside a buff brick courtyard wall with black-lagged pipework

MCS, the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, certifies installers and products for small-scale renewable heat and power. Home Energy Scotland funds a heat pump when both the installer and the product carry MCS certification. A company without it can still fit a heat pump, and you give up the grant of up to £7,500 and the interest-free loan that sits beside it.

Check the certificate yourself.
  • Search the company name on the MCS installer database
  • confirm air source heat pumps appear in the technologies it is certified for
  • match the certification number to the one printed on the quote.

Home Energy Scotland’s heat pump installation checklist points homeowners to the same database.

Two further registrations sit alongside MCS. TrustMark is the Government Endorsed Quality Scheme for work in and around the home, and a TrustMark-registered business gives you a complaints route if a job goes wrong. MCS installers also belong to a consumer code, and Home Energy Scotland lists three: the Renewable Energy Consumer Code, the Home Insulation and Energy Systems Contractors Scheme and the Glass and Glazing Federation. The installer’s MCS profile shows which one applies. Each code sets rules on contracts, deposits and complaints, so read its deposit section before you pay anything up front.

Aventus Eco is MCS certified, certification number IAA-10212, covering air source heat pumps, battery storage and solar PV, and we are TrustMark registered. Look us up on the register before the survey, the same way you would check anyone else.

The Survey Should Measure Every Room

A new white double-panel radiator on a painted wall above a tiled floor, and a new double-panel radiator on grey floor tiles beside a white door

The survey is where installers start to differ. A heat pump runs on cooler water than a boiler, so the size of the unit and the output of each radiator have to match the heat each room loses on a cold day. MCS requires a room-by-room heat loss calculation to BS EN 12831-1:2017 under its heat pump design standard, MIS 3005-D, and an installer needs measurements from your house to produce one.

Measured survey

Expect the engineer to measure each heated room, record what the walls, floors, windows and roof are made of, note open chimneys and air bricks, and look at the radiators, pipework, cylinder space and the spot for the outdoor unit.

Phone price

A price given over the phone, or worked out from floor area or the size of your old boiler, skips that work.

Our explainer on what happens in a heat pump survey goes through each measurement and the paperwork you should receive afterwards.

Ask one question before the visit ends: who turns these measurements into the design? In a small company it may be the engineer standing in your hall. In a larger one, a design team may work from the surveyor’s notes and photos. Either arrangement can produce a good system, and the answer tells you who to phone when the box room runs cold.

Get the heat loss of each room in your house measured, then hold every other quote against those figures.

“After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits.”

Design Flow Temperature and Sizing: Two Numbers to Get in Writing

A Panasonic Aquarea controller showing a 34°C flow and 47°C hot water, and a loft plant room with a Vaillant hot water cylinder, an underfloor heating manifold and expansion vessels

The design flow temperature is the hottest water the heat pump sends round the system on the coldest day it is designed for. A lower figure means higher efficiency and a lower running cost, and it also sets how large each radiator needs to be. Radiator designs for heat pumps aim for 45°C or below, and underfloor heating can run cooler. On our own jobs, Penny and Monique’s 1920s sandstone end-terrace in Mount Florida heats through radiators at 45°C, and Gavin’s new build in Bathgate heats through underfloor pipes at 35°C.

A quote that names a heat pump model with no flow temperature beside it leaves out the figure your bills depend on. Ask the installer to put it in writing, along with the efficiency the design expects at that temperature. Home Energy Scotland’s checklist lists the system’s efficiency values among the things a quote should explain.

Sizing comes from the heat loss total. Too small a unit runs flat out in a hard frost and still falls short; too large a unit short-cycles through spring and autumn. Put two quotes for the same house next to each other: if the heat pump sizes sit several kilowatts apart, the heat loss figures behind them differ too, so ask each installer for their whole-house figure and how they reached it. Our air source heat pump sizing guide for Scotland gives typical kilowatt ranges by house type to check an offer against.

What Heat Geek Training Means in a Heat Pump Installer

Press-fit copper pipework with a diverter valve and magnetic filter on OSB board, and copper risers fitted with blue and red lever valves

Heat Geek is a UK training company and installer network built around low flow temperature heating design. Its advanced course, Mastery, trains engineers in heat loss calculation, low temperature system design and emitter sizing.

MCS remains the certification the grant asks for.

Heat Geek training sits on top of it and covers the design decisions MCS sets minimum standards for.

The training belongs to a person, so ask which engineer on your job completed it and whether that engineer designs your system. A Heat Geek mention on a website counts for most when the trained engineer is the one sizing your radiators and setting your weather compensation curve. You can also ask to see an anonymised past design with its flow temperature, and the measured performance if that customer agreed to share it.

Our heat pump systems are designed by a Heat Geek Mastery trained engineer: room-by-room heat loss first, radiators sized to a low flow temperature, then controls set for the house at commissioning. The page on our Heat Geek heat pump installation sets out how that design work runs on a job.

Have your system designed by a Heat Geek Mastery trained engineer, with the flow temperature on the quote before you decide.

“Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why.”

How to Compare Heat Pump Quotes Line by Line

An attic plant room with a Panasonic indoor unit, hot water cylinder and copper pipework, and two expansion vessels with a filling loop and press-fit copper pipework on a timber-lined wall

Home Energy Scotland recommends quotes from at least three installers, and a funded application needs an itemised quote from the one you choose. Lay your quotes out together and work down the same rows on each.

CheckWhat a strong quote showsWhy it matters
Heat lossA whole-house figure in kW, with the room-by-room figures behind itSets the size of the heat pump
Heat pumpMake, model and rated output in kWLets you compare like with like
Design flow temperatureA stated figure, such as 45°CDrives efficiency and radiator sizes
EfficiencyThe expected efficiency at that flow temperatureHome Energy Scotland lists efficiency values among quote contents
RadiatorsWhich stay, which are replaced, any addedA common source of price gaps between quotes
Hot water cylinderSize in litres and where it goesCombi homes need space found for one
What the price coversRemoving the old boiler or tank, connection, commissioning, electrical workHome Energy Scotland’s checklist asks about removal and commissioning
Guarantees and warrantiesWorkmanship guarantee length and who insures it, manufacturer warranty years and conditionsShows who pays if something fails in year three
Payment termsDeposit amount, how it is protected, stage paymentsYour consumer code sets the deposit rules

A blank row is a question to send back. A heat loss total with no room figures behind it, or a heat pump size with no flow temperature, means the design work is unfinished.

Price gaps tend to sit in the radiators, the cylinder and the pipework. A cheaper quote that keeps every existing radiator may rely on a hotter flow temperature, and you would pay for that in running costs for as long as the system runs. For a quote laid out this way for your own home, our heat pump installation service across Scotland starts from the same measured survey.

Red Flags to Watch When You Choose a Heat Pump Installer

A large white twin-fan Vaillant heat pump beside a pebbledash wall, and a white Panasonic R32 heat pump against a pebbledash wall

Any one of these is a reason to slow down, and two together are a reason to walk away:

  • A price before anyone has measured the house.
  • Pressure to sign on the day, or a discount that disappears by the weekend. You have 14 days to cancel after signing a contract, and Home Energy Scotland reminds homeowners of that right.
  • An offer to start work before your Home Energy Scotland funding offer arrives in writing. Home Energy Scotland does not fund work after the fact.
  • A hybrid system presented as grant-funded. Home Energy Scotland funds heat pumps that provide 100% of heating and hot water, and hybrids are not eligible.
  • No MCS number on the quote, or a number that belongs to a different company on the register.
  • A deposit request with no answer on how the money is protected.
  • Nobody can tell you who designs the system or who you call after handover.

Reviews help with the last point. Look for homeowners whose heat pump has been through a winter, and read what happened when something went wrong after handover, since a tidy install day says little about the second January.

Book a survey, put every question on this list to us, and compare our answers with the other installers you speak to.

“Our heat pump had been incorrectly installed by another company that has since gone into liquidation, leaving us with nearly three years of no heating, ongoing faults, and constant leaks. Aventus Eco truly saved the day. Sean quickly identified the issues that had caused continuous problems for years and resolved them properly.”

The Home Energy Scotland Grant: Who Applies and What the Installer Supplies

A Vaillant hot water cylinder with an Aventus Eco sticker, and a dark grey Panasonic heat pump under the window of a sandstone terraced house

In Scotland, heat pump funding comes from Home Energy Scotland: a grant of up to £7,500, or £9,000 in remote rural, island and off-gas accessible rural areas, plus an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500. The heat pump has to provide all of your heating and hot water, and a heat pump that replaces an existing heat pump gets loan funding only.

You make the application.

It starts with a call to Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282, after which you register on its customer portal, upload an itemised quote from your chosen MCS installer, then wait for a written funding offer and sign the funding agreement before any work starts.

Home Energy Scotland aims to process complete applications within 10 working days.

Once the heat pump is in, you submit the final claim within nine months of signing the funding agreement, and you pay the installer yourself.

Your installer supplies the documents your application rests on: the itemised quote, then the MCS certificate and the invoice for your claim. The claim also needs a post-installation EPC from a registered Domestic Energy Assessor. Aventus Eco supplies the quote and MCS paperwork for each funded job. Eligibility and loan terms are set out in more depth in our guide to heat pump grants in Scotland.

Guarantees, Warranties and Aftercare After Handover

Rain beading on the casing and gold badge of a Vaillant heat pump, and on the louvres and wordmark of a grey Panasonic heat pump

Three separate promises protect a heat pump, and a good quote names all of them.

The workmanship guarantee covers the installation itself: pipework, wiring, controls and the way the system was put together.

The manufacturer warranty covers the heat pump and its parts, with conditions such as registering the unit or keeping to a service schedule, so ask what applies to the model you are offered.

The insurance or protection product behind the workmanship guarantee keeps that guarantee alive if the installer stops trading.

MCS requires certified installers to guarantee their workmanship on domestic jobs for at least two years and to insure that guarantee, so it is honoured if the company closes. Ask every installer, us included, who provides that cover and for how long, and keep the policy document with your handover pack. Home Energy Scotland’s checklist sets a lower floor of one year for an installer warranty, so hold MCS installers to the MCS figure.

Aftercare shows itself in the first winter. At handover, expect the installer to walk you through the controls and the app, explain the weather compensation settings and leave you the commissioning records. Ask how fast they respond to a fault call and whether they service heat pumps themselves.

Aventus Eco gives a 5-year workmanship guarantee on every installation, and the Vaillant and Panasonic heat pumps we fit carry manufacturer warranties of up to 7 years with registration.

Our installs take 3 to 5 days.

At handover we set up the controls and show you how to run them, and you keep a private WhatsApp group with us during and after the install.

See a Measured Design for Your Own Home

A £0 survey gives you room-by-room heat loss figures, a design flow temperature and a written quote you can lay beside any other installer’s. Use it as the benchmark for the rest of your shortlist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if a heat pump installer is MCS certified?

Search the company on the MCS installer database, confirm air source heat pumps are among the technologies it is certified for, and match the certification number to the one on your quote. In Scotland, Home Energy Scotland funds a heat pump only when the installer and the product are both MCS certified.

Home Energy Scotland recommends quotes from at least three installers. Compare the heat loss figures, design flow temperatures and heat pump sizes first, then the prices, because a total means little until you know what design sits behind it.

No. The Home Energy Scotland grant requires an MCS-certified installer and product. Heat Geek training is extra design training in low flow temperature systems, and you judge it by asking which engineer holds it and whether that engineer designs your system.

You do. The homeowner contacts Home Energy Scotland, applies through its customer portal and submits the final claim. The installer supplies the itemised quote, the MCS certificate and the invoice those steps need.

MCS requires a workmanship guarantee of at least two years on a home, insured in case the installer stops trading; Home Energy Scotland’s checklist asks for at least one year. Aventus Eco gives a 5-year workmanship guarantee on every installation in Scotland, separate from the manufacturer warranty on the heat pump.

Yes. Home Energy Scotland’s checklist confirms your right to cancel within 14 days of signing a contract. If you are applying for its funding, make sure no work starts before the written funding offer arrives, because Home Energy Scotland does not fund work that has already begun.

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

We wanted to retrofit our home to improve energy efficiency, change to an air source heat pump (ASHP) and add solar panels and a battery. Aventus Eco was recommended by a Retrofit Consultancy. Sean clearly explained and planned out the processes for our ASHP. We really felt that he was interested to make it work well for us. Installation was smooth. The team was well coordinated and communicated well during the process. They completed the work to a very high standard and minimised any disruption to our home. We were so impressed with the ASHP fitting that we quickly followed this up with Aventus Eco planning and installing our solar panels and battery. We would highly recommend Sean and the Aventus Eco team.

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.

Our household was going through the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan scheme as we qualified for a heat pump. Sean came recommended by an insulation company and I’m glad that I reached out. Despite being very busy, Sean was keen to get a solution for us, his knowledge and work ethic came across immediately so we were happy to have Aventus take on the work. Meeting, survey, work scheduled, and completed to a very high standard. We’re very happy with our heat pump system as well as the ongoing support from Sean.

Sean and the team at Aventus Eco did a fantastic job installing our air source heat pump. They were really friendly, proactive and efficient throughout the whole process. After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits. The installation itself was carried out with real care and professionalism. The team put everything back in place afterwards and left the house as though they had never been there. Since the instal, the house now constantly feels like it is at a comfortable temperature, and the amount of energy we use on a daily basis compared to our old electric boiler has been reduced. We are looking forward to seeing how this continues in the colder months. We would happily recommend Aventus Eco and Sean to anyone considering an air source heat pump.

Outstanding Service from Aventus Eco Ltd – Highly Recommended! I had been struggling with unusually high electricity consumption—around 50 kWh per day—due to my air source heat pump system. Despite reaching out to multiple companies, including the original installer, no one was willing to help or even respond. That’s when I contacted Sean from Aventus Eco Ltd, and I’m so glad I did. Sean promptly visited my home, conducted a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors, and successfully identified the root cause of the issue. He didn’t stop there—he also provided a detailed report that I could share with the installer and even offered to assist further in resolving the problem. Sean’s professionalism, technical expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile truly set him apart. He is an absolute superstar, and I can’t recommend Aventus Eco Ltd highly enough for anyone facing similar challenges.

Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.

Aventus Eco installed solar panels and a battery and all went like clockwork. Now running virtually all day on a few £ of off peak electricity (Octopus) and the rest is solar feeding into the battery. Very pleased with the result and the thorough job done by Aventus Eco.

After having several companies provide quotes for solar panels for my husband and me, Aventus ECO was by far the best. Their team was professional, transparent, and most importantly, there was no high-pressure sales pitch at all!

We initially had Sean over to provide a quote, and as we didn’t know much about heat pumps, he explained everything clearly and in a way we could easily understand. He emphasized the importance of proper heat loss calculations for our property, which helped us determine which existing radiators we could keep. Sean also walked us through how the system would operate once installed and shared tips on how to get the best efficiency from it. When the team came to install the system, the entire process was incredibly streamlined and completed in just three days. The guys made sure to cover all our carpets and left the place spotless. I can honestly say Sean and his team were fantastic—our heat pump is now up and running, and even on the coldest days, our energy usage is nearly half compared to gas. Although we’ve needed to tweak a few settings, Sean took the time to show us exactly how to adjust everything. I would highly recommend him and his team to anyone. In fact, we’ve already referred him to our neighbors, and he’s now working on their system too. Thanks again, Sean and team

We had an excellent experience with Sean and his team at Aventus Eco. They recently installed our air source heat pump and hot water system, and Sean was hands-on throughout the entire process. What really stood out was the additional guidance Sean provided about how we could improve our home’s insulation and reduce drafts. He explained how making these simple DIY improvements would help lower the heat loss in our home, ultimately reducing our energy bills in the long run. Sean’s approach was practical and cost-conscious, giving us great tips for upgrades that we could do ourselves to make the system even more efficient. The level of detail and care he put into both the installation and the advice was impressive. It’s clear that Aventus Eco is dedicated to not just installing systems, but making sure they perform at their best for the customer. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome and would definitely recommend Aventus Eco to anyone looking for a reliable, knowledgeable, and customer-focused company.

Aventus Eco is hands down the best company I’ve worked with in a long time. From the first phone call, I knew I was in good hands. Sean took the time to understand my needs and walked me through the entire process, from initial consultation to installation day. What really stood out to me was how well they communicated — I always knew what was happening and when. There were no surprises, and the installation was done ahead of schedule! The heat pump has been running flawlessly, and I’ve already noticed a drop in my energy bills. I highly recommend Sean and his team for their professionalism and efficiency!

I recently had an air source heat pump installed by Aventus Eco, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Sean was my main point of contact, and he was fantastic. He walked me through the entire process from start to finish, explaining everything clearly and making sure I understood what to expect. On the day of the installation, the team showed up on time and got straight to work. They were professional and efficient, and the whole installation went smoothly. They took the time to ensure everything was set up correctly and even cleaned up after themselves, leaving no mess behind. The heat pump itself is working great, and I’ve already noticed a difference in my home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Overall, I’m really pleased with the service from Aventus Eco and would definitely recommend them to others. Thanks again to Sean and the whole team!
