High Temperature Heat Pumps for Old Scottish Homes: Do You Need One?

A high temperature heat pump is an air source unit that can send water round your radiators at 70 to 75°C, close to what an old gas or oil boiler delivers. Installers point owners of sandstone tenements, granite terraces and stone villas towards one because it promises to work with the radiators already on the wall. Two of our own old-house jobs point the other way: a 1920s sandstone terrace in Mount Florida runs on a 45°C design, and a 220-year-old stone house with walls 600mm thick needed two radiator changes for its heat loss. A design at a low flow temperature costs far less to run.

Key takeaways

The pitch for running hot sounds sensible in a cold stone house. Keep the boiler-era radiators, set the water to boiler temperatures and let the heat pump get on with it. The catch sits in the electricity meter, and you can put a price on it.

Heat Pump Flow Temperature and Why It Sets Your Running Cost

A Panasonic Aquarea controller screen showing a 34°C flow and 47°C hot water, and a Vaillant heat pump controller mounted on a white wall above cable trunking

Flow temperature is the temperature of the water leaving the heat pump on its way to your radiators or underfloor pipes. A boiler in an older house often sends water out at 70°C or more. A heat pump can heat the same rooms with cooler water when each radiator is big enough to pass the heat into its room, and every degree you take off the flow saves the compressor work.

Vaillant publishes the effect for the 7kW aroTHERM plus, the size we fitted in that Mount Florida terrace. Its installation manual gives the coefficient of performance (COP, the units of heat delivered for each unit of electricity used) at four flow temperatures with the outside air at 7°C.

Flow temperatureCOP at 7°C outsideElectricity used for 10 kWh of heat
35°C4.82.1 kWh
45°C3.62.8 kWh
55°C2.93.4 kWh
65°C2.34.3 kWh

Source: Vaillant UK installation and maintenance instructions for the aroTHERM plus VWL 75/6 A 230V S2 (document 0020330791_03, 06.11.2023), EN 14511 test points at 7°C outdoor air, checked 13 October 2026.

Those are single test points on a mild day. A seasonal figure (SCOP) takes in the frosts as well and comes out lower at every flow temperature, and the certified seasonal listings we checked stop at 55°C. Any air source heat pump follows the same slope: hotter water means more electricity for each unit of heat.

Flow temperature also moves with the weather. Weather compensation reads an outdoor sensor and raises the flow only as far as the day needs, so the design figure on your quote is the temperature for the coldest day the system was sized for, and milder days run cooler. Robert’s house in Cumbernauld sits 400 feet up on an exposed hillside, and we designed his system for a 45°C flow at -4°C outside. In a week that dropped to -5°C, Sean’s readings from the unit showed a 43°C flow holding the house at 20.5°C. Our Cumbernauld heat pump case study covers the old microbore pipework that came out to get there.

Find out the flow temperature your house needs on its coldest day, worked out from what each room loses.

“Sean from Aventus was able to face time my dad and talk him through concerns about how his air source heat pump was performing during cold weather . We managed to resolve the issues with Sean’s patient help and expert knowledge.”

High Temperature Heat Pumps in the UK: The 70 to 75°C Units

A dark grey Panasonic R290 heat pump beside a buff brick courtyard wall with black-lagged pipework, and the white casing and twin fans of a Vaillant aroTHERM plus

No standard fixes the meaning of “high temperature” on a spec sheet. In the UK market the label goes on air source units that reach 70 to 75°C water from the compressor alone, without an electric heater doing the last stretch.

Two routes get a unit there.

One is the refrigerant. R290, which is propane, lets a compressor lift water to higher temperatures. Vaillant lists a heating water range of 20 to 75°C on every size of its aroTHERM plus, and Panasonic quotes up to 75°C for its Aquarea L series with the outdoor air at -10°C.

The other route keeps a conventional refrigerant and engineers around it: Daikin’s Altherma 3 H HT runs on R32 and quotes 70°C water at -15°C outside from the heat pump alone.

A high ceiling and a high running temperature are separate things. An R290 unit such as the aroTHERM plus can run a house designed for 45°C and another designed for 65°C, with the same box on the wall outside. The design flow temperature written into the quote decides which of those two systems you end up with, and the bills follow it. Our Vaillant aroTHERM plus review goes through that unit’s sizes, noise figures and warranty conditions.

A ceiling figure says little about an old house on its own. The useful number is the output a unit holds at the flow temperature your design needs on a cold day, which the manufacturer’s capacity tables show and your installer should quote against.

Are High Temperature Heat Pumps Less Efficient? Running Hot vs Changing Radiators

A new double-panel radiator on grey floor tiles beside a white door, and the top of a new double-panel radiator beside a timber door frame

The COP figures above come from a unit rated to 75°C, so they already show a high temperature heat pump at each setting. The penalty comes from the flow temperature you run at, and it shows once you put a price on each unit of heat. Ofgem’s price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 sets Southern Scotland’s single-rate Direct Debit prices at 26.11p per kWh for electricity and 7.87p per kWh for gas. Electricity carries 0% VAT from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, so the heat pump rows below sit lower than they will once VAT returns.

Divide the electricity rate by the COPs above and set a condensing gas boiler beside them.

Heat sourceCost per kWh of heatCost of 10,000 kWh of heat
Heat pump at a 35°C flow (COP 4.8)5.4p£544
Heat pump at a 45°C flow (COP 3.6)7.3p£725
Heat pump at a 55°C flow (COP 2.9)9.0p£900
Heat pump at a 65°C flow (COP 2.3)11.4p£1,135
Gas boiler at 90% efficiency8.7p£874

Unit rates from Ofgem’s energy price cap for Southern Scotland, 1 October to 31 December 2026, Direct Debit, single rate, standing charges excluded. COPs from Vaillant’s 7°C test points for the aroTHERM plus 7kW. The 90% boiler efficiency and the 10,000 kWh of heat are illustrative assumptions.

Held at 65°C, the heat pump charges more for each unit of heat than the gas boiler it replaced, and about 57% more than the same machine at 45°C. On 10,000 kWh of heat that gap comes to £410 at these rates, and it returns every winter for the life of the system, while radiator work is a one-off cost.

Bringing the flow down from 65°C to 45°C asks each radiator to give out its room’s heat with cooler water, so the undersized ones get swapped for larger or double-panel models. Our guide to sizing radiators for a heat pump sets out that room-by-room check. In an older house the shortfall tends to sit in the rooms with the most glass and outside wall, which keeps the list of changes shorter than owners expect.

Running hot can also happen by accident. We were called out to a heat pump held at a fixed 53°C flow to keep a thermal store hot, with four circulating pumps on the system and two of them running around the clock. The homeowner was paying over £500 a month to run it. We took the thermal store out, fitted a hot water cylinder and a 3-port valve to separate heating from hot water, fitted new filters and reworked the pipework, so the heat pump no longer has to hold a store at 53°C.

See the radiator changes and the running cost for your own house side by side, so the choice is made with numbers in front of you.

“We are also grateful for his knowledge and input into adjusting our heat pump and currently our bills are massively reduced.”

Hot Water and Legionella Cycles: Where 60°C Is Needed

A Vaillant hot water cylinder with an Aventus Eco sticker, and an attic plant room with a hot water cylinder, a Panasonic Aquarea indoor unit and copper pipework

Hot water is the one job in the house that needs high temperatures from time to time. The Health and Safety Executive’s legionella guidance, written for those responsible for water systems, says hot water should be stored at 60°C or above. In homes, the normal heat pump practice is to keep the cylinder at a lower everyday temperature and run a periodic sterilisation cycle that lifts it above 60°C.

The ceiling decides how that cycle gets done.

A unit rated to 75°C can complete it on the compressor.

A unit with a lower ceiling hands the last few degrees to the immersion heater in the cylinder, which turns one unit of electricity into one unit of heat.

A cycle that runs on a timetable adds far less to the bill than a heating system held hot all winter.

The radiators never need to share that temperature. Heating and hot water sit on separate circuits, switched by a diverting valve, so the controller heats the cylinder to one setting and the house to another. A 75°C ceiling earns its keep at the cylinder, and the radiators in the same house can still run on a 45°C design.

Old Scottish Homes: Sandstone, Granite and Solid-Wall Villas

A dark grey Panasonic heat pump under the window of a sandstone terraced house, and an anthracite Vaillant heat pump on feet in front of a sandstone base course

Sandstone and granite walls have no cavity to fill, tenement flats carry tall ceilings and big sash windows, and Victorian and Edwardian villas have bay-windowed rooms that one radiator under the glass never kept warm. All of that raises heat loss, and higher heat loss calls for bigger radiators or hotter water, which is why these houses hear the high temperature pitch more than any others.

A survey puts a number on that loss for each room instead of assuming the worst for the whole house. People had told Penny and Monique that their 1920s sandstone end-terrace in Mount Florida, Glasgow, couldn’t run on a heat pump. We fitted a 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus, the R290 unit that can reach 75°C, and designed it for a 45°C flow. We replaced four radiators with higher-output models, added one upstairs and fitted two in a new rear extension, and the house holds 21°C through the year.

Stone-built properties bring other survey questions too, from wall construction to finding room for the cylinder, and our article on heat pumps in older Scottish homes takes them in turn.

The oldest house on our list is a 220-year-old stone property in rural Scotland with walls 600mm thick, half of it uninsulated, and upstairs radiators fed by 8mm microbore under new oak floors. The owner wanted to keep his oil boiler as a backup. The heat loss calculations called for two radiator changes in the living and dining rooms, the microbore stayed where it was, and in a week of -4 and -5°C Sean’s readings showed the system running above 400% efficiency. Sean’s promise to the owner before the work started was blunt: “If a heat pump doesn’t work, it’s not the heat pump’s fault, it’s my fault.”

Glasgow’s tenements add their own puzzles, such as a shared back court for the outdoor unit and neighbours above and below. Our heat pump installation in Glasgow starts every tenement, terrace and villa with the same room-by-room survey, and the design flow temperature comes out of it.

Find out whether your tenement flat, granite terrace or stone villa can run at a low flow temperature, and which rooms would need work first.

“They arrived on time, respected our property, and completed the job to a high standard. The heat pump is performing wonderfully, and we’re enjoying a more comfortable home environment.”

MCS Design Rules and the Home Energy Scotland Grant

Copper risers with blue and red lever valves beside an expansion vessel, and press-fit copper pipework with a diverter valve and magnetic filter on an OSB board

Home Energy Scotland’s heat pump grant of up to £7,500 (£9,000 with the rural and island uplift), and the optional £7,500 interest-free loan beside it, both require an MCS-certified installer and an MCS-certified product. The heat pump must also provide 100% of the home’s heating and hot water. A high temperature unit qualifies on the same terms as any other heat pump, so the ceiling on the spec sheet has no bearing on the funding.

MCS’s design standard, MIS 3005-D, asks the installer to choose a heat pump that covers at least 100% of the calculated heat loss at the flow temperature the system will run, with no help from an electric heater, and to back that choice with the manufacturer’s performance data. That ties the design flow temperature to the size of the unit, because output at 65°C has to be read from the 65°C column. MCS changed the standard in December 2024 so hybrids can be sized to 55% of the heat load at a 55°C flow, and Home Energy Scotland still funds no hybrid, so in Scotland that route gives up the grant.

The MCS Heat Emitter Guide scores each design with a temperature star rating of up to six stars, awarding more stars for lower emitter temperatures. Its guidance table runs all the way to a 61 to 65°C band, so MCS allows a hot design and marks it down. The installer works through every heated room, and the room needing the hottest water sets the flow temperature for the house.

Ask for the design flow temperature and the star rating in writing with each quote, and if two quotes for the same house sit far apart, ask each installer to show you the room that set their figure.

A Standard Heat Pump With the Right Design, or a High Temperature Unit?

A white Vaillant aroTHERM plus at the corner of a lawn beside a white rendered house, and a grey heat pump on feet on block paving at the corner of an orange brick house

A high temperature design earns its place in a short list of houses.

  • In a listed building, planning can require the original radiators to stay in the principal rooms.
  • Some rooms have no wall space left for a larger radiator, and some pipework is buried in a way that can’t carry enough water at a lower temperature even after the calculations are done.
  • A household that wants radiators hot to the touch may choose one with the running cost table in front of them.

Even in those houses the choice is seldom all or nothing. The room that needs the hottest water sets the flow for every other room, so changing the two or three radiators holding the design back can lower the design flow temperature for the whole house. A 75°C ceiling then works as headroom for the hot water cycle and a hard frost, and on a quote it sits alongside a design figure well below it.

Find the Flow Temperature Your Home Needs

A £0 survey measures your home’s heat loss room by room, names the radiators that set the flow temperature and shows the running cost at the design figure. It also confirms whether the system meets Home Energy Scotland’s 100% heating and hot water condition.

High Temperature Heat Pump FAQs

Rain beading on the louvres of a Panasonic heat pump, and a dark twin-fan heat pump on black feet on a gravel bed beside a timber-clad wall

Do I need a high temperature heat pump for an old house?

Not in the old houses we have named here. Our 1920s sandstone end-terrace in Mount Florida runs on a 45°C design after we replaced the radiators that fell short, and our 220-year-old stone house job needed two radiator changes for its heat loss. A high temperature design fits houses where radiators or pipework cannot change.

Running any heat pump hot costs efficiency, and the high temperature models follow the same rule. Vaillant’s figures for its 7kW aroTHERM plus, a unit rated to 75°C, show a COP of 3.6 at a 45°C flow and 2.3 at 65°C, with 7°C outdoor air.

A heat pump should run at the lowest flow temperature the radiators allow on the coldest design day. Our Mount Florida terrace and Cumbernauld radiator system are designed at 45°C, our underfloor heating new build in Bathgate at 35°C, and weather compensation lowers the flow further on milder days.

Often it can, at a running cost. Keeping every radiator and running at 65°C means paying about 57% more for each unit of heat than at 45°C, so compare that yearly cost with the one-off price of changing the radiators that limit the design.

Yes, on the same terms as other heat pumps. The installer and product must be MCS certified and the system must provide 100% of heating and hot water, which opens a grant of up to £7,500 (£9,000 for eligible rural and island homes) plus an optional £7,500 interest-free loan.

HSE’s legionella guidance for those responsible for water systems says hot water should be stored at 60°C or above. Domestic heat pumps keep the cylinder cooler day to day and run a periodic cycle above 60°C, using the compressor on units rated to 75°C or the immersion heater for the last few degrees on others.

Aventus installed an ASHP heating system for us in a 1950s house in Newton Mearns. Initially we contacted them to help us future proof our home as we were planning some retrofit works. They carried out the preparatory pipework during the build & were very good at working around our timeline and liaising with the builders. Following this we decided to see it through and had the new heat pump installed towards the end of the building works. During the installation, the team were all very polite and helpful. We had the majority of pipework replaced with copper alongside 4 new radiators & a cylinder installation which was all carried out to a high standard. The team were patient with our specific requests. We are delighted with the dark grey Panasonic unit & appreciated the fact the unit is not over specified which means that it sits neatly underneath our new windows. There were various post install issues however these were resolved with a professional attitude. So far we have found the house to be very cosy with exceptionally hot water which exceeds our expectations. Time will tell over the winter how efficient it is given the age of the house, however we feel reassured having Aventus by our side and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.

We wanted to retrofit our home to improve energy efficiency, change to an air source heat pump (ASHP) and add solar panels and a battery. Aventus Eco was recommended by a Retrofit Consultancy. Sean clearly explained and planned out the processes for our ASHP. We really felt that he was interested to make it work well for us. Installation was smooth. The team was well coordinated and communicated well during the process. They completed the work to a very high standard and minimised any disruption to our home. We were so impressed with the ASHP fitting that we quickly followed this up with Aventus Eco planning and installing our solar panels and battery. We would highly recommend Sean and the Aventus Eco team.

Changing from gas central heating to renewables isn’t simple but, having asked four companies to quote to convert our system, Sean stood out as someone who cared about getting the design right, optimising it for our house while clearly explaining how and why. He helped us understand how heat pumps, solar panels and batteries all work together and gave us confidence that the conversion would be possible and relatively simple. The Anvetus installation team were brilliant - polite and efficient with a can-do attitude to problem solving. They cared about our property, checking in with us as they worked and clearing up as much as possible each day. Everything felt planned and coordinated and a heat pump, new hot water tank and system, 10 solar panels and a battery were installed and up and running in a week, despite some unexpected challenges along the way. The whole team went out of their way to make this a smooth experience, from initial visit to final handover paperwork. We would highly recommend Sean and Aventus Eco.

Our household was going through the Home Energy Scotland grant and loan scheme as we qualified for a heat pump. Sean came recommended by an insulation company and I’m glad that I reached out. Despite being very busy, Sean was keen to get a solution for us, his knowledge and work ethic came across immediately so we were happy to have Aventus take on the work. Meeting, survey, work scheduled, and completed to a very high standard. We’re very happy with our heat pump system as well as the ongoing support from Sean.

Sean and the team at Aventus Eco did a fantastic job installing our air source heat pump. They were really friendly, proactive and efficient throughout the whole process. After trying to find a suitable air source heat pump installer for a number of years, Sean filled us with confidence from the moment we met him. He was the first person who properly reassured us about the design, the suitability of the system and the long-term cost benefits. The installation itself was carried out with real care and professionalism. The team put everything back in place afterwards and left the house as though they had never been there. Since the instal, the house now constantly feels like it is at a comfortable temperature, and the amount of energy we use on a daily basis compared to our old electric boiler has been reduced. We are looking forward to seeing how this continues in the colder months. We would happily recommend Aventus Eco and Sean to anyone considering an air source heat pump.

Outstanding Service from Aventus Eco Ltd – Highly Recommended! I had been struggling with unusually high electricity consumption—around 50 kWh per day—due to my air source heat pump system. Despite reaching out to multiple companies, including the original installer, no one was willing to help or even respond. That’s when I contacted Sean from Aventus Eco Ltd, and I’m so glad I did. Sean promptly visited my home, conducted a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors, and successfully identified the root cause of the issue. He didn’t stop there—he also provided a detailed report that I could share with the installer and even offered to assist further in resolving the problem. Sean’s professionalism, technical expertise, and willingness to go the extra mile truly set him apart. He is an absolute superstar, and I can’t recommend Aventus Eco Ltd highly enough for anyone facing similar challenges.

Exactly as the process should be – right from start to finish Aventus Eco fitted solar panels, battery storage and an air-source heat pump, and the whole experience has been great. There was no hard sell from these guys, just lots of advice from people who clearly care about what they do, their business and their reputation. They took the time to get the design right for my home, including properly working out our power use and heat loss and sizing everything accordingly. The solar panels were a no brainer, but Aventus suggested right sizing the solar panels and adding battery storage. Home energy when the sun’s not shining – brilliant. It’s working flawlessly. The heat pump means I’m no longer dependent on global oil and I’ve cut my carbon footprint. Heat pumps get a lot of bad press, often due to hard-sell companies pushing numbers rather than doing the job properly. The difference here is the care Aventus put in, and the work they have done with Heat Geek and their accreditation process (check their Youtube videos). That was the deciding factor. None of the other companies I spoke to had it. It gave me real confidence everything would be set up properly — and it shows. Originally, I wanted to keep the oil boiler “just in case”. I’m glad I took the leap to ditch it and trust the Aventus design. The house is comfortable and warm throughout. Neat install, great communication, and they made the grant process easy. Aventus Eco combine technical know-how with genuine customer care, and I’d happily recommend them. Thanks. Genuinely.

Outstanding service, difficult decision to make to change to air source heat pump especially give the level of misinformation. Sean/Aventus Eco were outstanding in helping me explore and decide that this was right solution. Additionally it involved full house re-plumb because of problems with the old system, This was handled sensitively and professionally by all the members of the team with Sean setting very high expectations for everyone. I had hesitated because of the level of disruption but in fact it all went very smoothly. Thank you Sean/Aventis Eco and your team. I have no hesitation in fully recommending Sean and Aventus Eco Ltd.

Excellent service before & after installation We've had very attentive customer service from Sean, and are very happy with the outcome of the installation of solar panels & batteries. We are also grateful for his knowledge and input into adjusting our heat pump and currently our bills are massively reduced. Being able to text Sean at any time to ask a question and get a helpful reply within a reasonable amount of time has been a very important aspect to me of the service before and after installation. I would recommend Aventus Eco. Date of experience: May 02, 2025

Sean with Aventus Eco came out and walked us through the entire process of solar panels from start to finish, and we are so chuffed with the results. Sean is a brilliant guy who really is diligent to give you the best service. Not only that, I know if we had any questions in the future he would be here to help us out in a heartbeat. He gives top quality service and wants to make sure you’re 100% happy. You’re definitely in safe hands with Aventus Eco, we would highly recommend!

After calling many companies and having an electrician come and wrongly replace our fit meter Sean could not have been more helpful. He took the time to help, explained everything so well despite it being a small job. He arranged for an electrican to come and checked in afterwards. I couldn't rate him higher, we are very grateful for his help.

Fantastic service from Sean. Extremely knowledgeable about energy efficiency. Customer service has been amazing from start to finish including checking after a few weeks in to make sure everything was perfect. A level of aftercare I haven’t experienced anywhere else.

Aventus Eco installed solar panels and a battery and all went like clockwork. Now running virtually all day on a few £ of off peak electricity (Octopus) and the rest is solar feeding into the battery. Very pleased with the result and the thorough job done by Aventus Eco.

After having several companies provide quotes for solar panels for my husband and me, Aventus ECO was by far the best. Their team was professional, transparent, and most importantly, there was no high-pressure sales pitch at all!

We initially had Sean over to provide a quote, and as we didn’t know much about heat pumps, he explained everything clearly and in a way we could easily understand. He emphasized the importance of proper heat loss calculations for our property, which helped us determine which existing radiators we could keep. Sean also walked us through how the system would operate once installed and shared tips on how to get the best efficiency from it. When the team came to install the system, the entire process was incredibly streamlined and completed in just three days. The guys made sure to cover all our carpets and left the place spotless. I can honestly say Sean and his team were fantastic—our heat pump is now up and running, and even on the coldest days, our energy usage is nearly half compared to gas. Although we’ve needed to tweak a few settings, Sean took the time to show us exactly how to adjust everything. I would highly recommend him and his team to anyone. In fact, we’ve already referred him to our neighbors, and he’s now working on their system too. Thanks again, Sean and team

We had an excellent experience with Sean and his team at Aventus Eco. They recently installed our air source heat pump and hot water system, and Sean was hands-on throughout the entire process. What really stood out was the additional guidance Sean provided about how we could improve our home’s insulation and reduce drafts. He explained how making these simple DIY improvements would help lower the heat loss in our home, ultimately reducing our energy bills in the long run. Sean’s approach was practical and cost-conscious, giving us great tips for upgrades that we could do ourselves to make the system even more efficient. The level of detail and care he put into both the installation and the advice was impressive. It’s clear that Aventus Eco is dedicated to not just installing systems, but making sure they perform at their best for the customer. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome and would definitely recommend Aventus Eco to anyone looking for a reliable, knowledgeable, and customer-focused company.

Aventus Eco is hands down the best company I’ve worked with in a long time. From the first phone call, I knew I was in good hands. Sean took the time to understand my needs and walked me through the entire process, from initial consultation to installation day. What really stood out to me was how well they communicated — I always knew what was happening and when. There were no surprises, and the installation was done ahead of schedule! The heat pump has been running flawlessly, and I’ve already noticed a drop in my energy bills. I highly recommend Sean and his team for their professionalism and efficiency!

I recently had an air source heat pump installed by Aventus Eco, and I couldn’t be happier with the experience. Sean was my main point of contact, and he was fantastic. He walked me through the entire process from start to finish, explaining everything clearly and making sure I understood what to expect. On the day of the installation, the team showed up on time and got straight to work. They were professional and efficient, and the whole installation went smoothly. They took the time to ensure everything was set up correctly and even cleaned up after themselves, leaving no mess behind. The heat pump itself is working great, and I’ve already noticed a difference in my home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Overall, I’m really pleased with the service from Aventus Eco and would definitely recommend them to others. Thanks again to Sean and the whole team!
